I have the CD but I'm considering selling it, it's so loud I don't find any pleasure in listening to it.
I don't remember the last time I heard so few albums in a week:
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill Jorge Palma - Acto Contínuo Fausto - Por Este Rio Acima Jonas Munk & Ulrich Schnaus - Passage
Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygène (It's incredible how it always sound so fresh despite having listened to it hundreds of times.) Osanna - Palepoli (It's been a long time since I heard it. Thanks for remembering me MFP ) |
Hey Sam!! How goes it, Buddy!
Yeah. That last Rush album really tanked in audio quality. What a far cry from Moving Pictures eh? It is a joke really. The album was mastered by Brian “big bass’ Gardner who primarily specializes in hip hop albums and it really shows. I didn’t want to sound too critical, but Clockwork Angels is such a hard listen. Thin guitars with way too much bloated yet lifeless bass with an ass load of compression. It is really too bad cause I like the album, but everyone I listen to it ( very very quietly ) I cringe. Sam. I’d sell it cause I think one day they will remix it like they did for vapor trails. :) |
I have the CD that came in the Fanpack bundle, I don't listen to it much but I never noticed the subpar audio quality...Might play it tomorrow. What I play mainly is the vinyl version issued by RoadRunner (not a fan of RR stuff). Although this version is not too bad avg DR of 12 and the CDs I see is avg of 6-7.....OUCH!!! |
Yup
Very subpar, but all their CDs sounds a little on the crushed side. You gotta use warm equipment to have the best experience out of them. Tube amp with a v-shaped headphone sound sig you are golden. However if you listen with extremely revealing gear you will cry. I know I did. |
So I'm playing Rush~CA via my CD.....It suffers from no dynamics for sure and is bass heavy, more muddy bass than boom boom. My preamp does have tone controls so I added some treble and is better. Also turned off my sub as it was just muddying it more. The mastering is decent as the volume is not pushed too much like in traditional brick walling, where this CD suffers from is a bad mixing job, it needs to be remixed. Mr Raskulinecz is not a good mix engineer, some of his other work is sub par also. | Oh goodness me my friend. That CA disc needs some serious reworking. The whole thing is incredibly problematic . Raskulinecz Does a good job mixing metal. He really impressed me with Trivium’s Silence in the Snow. It is a metal cd that actually breathes. Lol. Brain Gardner is really great hip hop mastering engineer. Truth is both guys truly know what they are doing and I think it has to do with the politics of the record label for how loud they wanted the music to be. That is just my guess of course. I have to say some CDs in 2020 have impressed me sound quality wise, but of course many have not. It really makes buying new music difficult for me. However I have been really digging paradise Lost lately. And Jaime Gomez Arellano does a decent job letting the bands music breathe. It will never be 1985 DNR like a Dire Straits album, but at least it is listenable.

You can always check Discogs for reviews on the CD version you are interested in...People will leave comments. Also you can ask on the Steve Hoffman forums for feedback.....those guys are brutally honest and uber knowledgeable on CDs.

Some fun spins today.
Grand master Flash— The Message
Paradise Lost— Medusa
Chicago— 17 ( SACD version from MOFI)
Deep Purple— Shades 1968-1998 Disc 3 /4 from BOXSET.
Michael Holmes— Subterranea ( motion picture soundtrack) — this is surprisingly amazing. Beautiful scoring by holmes. He is more than just a guitar player.

Nice selections José I bought an original German pressing of "So" last February and it didn't spin on my turntable yet. I'm sorry you had to listen to CA on CD because of us

I have my weekly listens on my PC but before I forget, I heard King Crimson's Power to Believe while browsing LP's on a record store and talking about Prog with the owner. Bliss I'll post my findings later.

This week:
Duran Duran - Rio (First listen, although I knew some songs from it.)
Prism - Prism (Twice. Instrumental Fusion/Funk with really sweet production.) Logos - Sadako e le mille gru di carta Haken - Virus (First listen. It was less straightforward Metal than I thought it would be. "Carousel" and "Messiah Complex" provide something different.) The Cardigans - First Band on the Moon Tomoyo Harada - I Could Be Free Space Circus - Funky Caravan (Really tight Funk with Prog influences.) Weather Report - Tale Spinnin' (Picked a random WR album, I didn't know it was the ill reputed album from the 70's but I quite liked it.) Nicklas Sørensen - Solo 2 The Cardigans - First Band on the Moon Tomoyo Harada - I Could Be Free Air - 10 000 Hz Legend Amoeba Split - Dance of the Goodbyes Dungen - Häxan Dungen - 4 Art Zoyd - Le Marriage du Ciel et de l'Enfer Jean-Luc Ponty - Mystical Adventures

Thanks Sam.....clearly I blame you guys !! It was fine I had not played the CD in a very long time, it needs a remix for sure but not sure that will happen at all.
Very cool I love So, but then again I love all his solo material. So and Us are my favs, his music is setup perfectly for an audiophile release, the music is so engaging and all the nuances he weaves into the music is awesome when I am sitting and 100% engaged in his records. It's a gorgeous listen.......
Is yours one of the German language versions?
