---Smoking causes direct harm to the user. Guns not so much---

Excuse me?
I have to give up and lie down a bit.
I now deeply regret having participated in this particular discussion.
Have fun!

Ok.
On the other hand that work-till-exhaustion mentality has given people standards of living unheard of before.

Among many 100000 difference. I just had to type the first thing that came to mind. I'm in a hurry.

Given some people standards of living unheard of before. You can work harder and have a better work ethic than anyone and not have a damn thing to show for it in this country. Not to say it isn't that way anywhere else, but America is not the land where anybody can get rich. The rich are supported by those that work for a pittance, and if they weren't around, there wouldn't be any rich.

Just a fallacy about conservatism that I dislike a lot.

But it is an uneven dichotomy. The rich need a bunch of poor but I would suppose the poor do not need the ultra rich.

I think that in the USA if a man works hard, does lots of overtime, sacrifices his holiday, neglects his family, and is never ill or late, his boss can buy himself a new car soon.

Yeah about 400 per year and most non-fatal. That will scare someone.

And that's not unavoidable. It's perfectly avoidable as long as you're not an idiot. You can be as smart as you want and cigarettes won't be too thwarted.

Look up direct in the dictionary while you're lying there.

Despite the tragic loss of innocent lives...

Isn't there some kind of poetic justice that a gun-happy mother dies from her own vice and from her own flesh & blood's doings??

After all, he who lives by the sword....

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

The problem is that in both cases, there are colateral victims that haven't asked for anything...

The idiot users don't die as much as the stander-bys do

Second hand and straight-combustion (coming directly from the burning end) smokes are even worse than the drug intended to be inhaled...

^ I think a bigger issue that people have is filling the new founded free time with something meaningful. Instead of thinking I have to work all day so that I have food for my kids and then tomorrow I have to work again so my kids have food and then etc now you're forced to think I have what I need now what do I do? Which brings up all those questions of what we're supposed to be doing, if we should be doing anything, if any of that matters, and then oh sh*t these are scary questions so I better find something to take my mind off them temporarily.

Well, I'd have gueesed that such a reasonable concept was beyond your grasping means Tongue

(sorry that was too temptingWink)

as for second hand smoke and lost bullets liabilities, look it up for yourselves... plenty of reports and stats around

Only a good solid bullet-proof layer of bad faith  (and NRA membership) could deny such evidence that doesn't need to be proven anymore by anyone of good faith.

But I am (an atheist one at that too).... And  common sense (and gun-control) take the place of a need for a religion...

One's freedom is limited to and where other's freedom would be hindered...
