Just listening to the first Pavlov`s Dog album for the first time since maybe 1984 ! I mean kind of good. Mellotrons, flutes, orchestrations, thoughtful lyrics and I know I know, the guy with the high voice ( David Surkamp ) who always gets compared to Geddy Lee. Poor guy, these comparisons are unfair because their music actually has much more depth than Rush. Maybe it`s comparing apples to oranges but it`s very relaxing to listen to after a all these years. Maybe I`m getting old. Any other thoughts on this great band. Bill Bruford even did some session work with them.

Well - I like both bands, and they are apples and oranges. I agree with your opinions largely, just check my reviews of their two classic albums (never heard the third one that apparently shouldn't have been).

Their first album is a true masterpiece of prog rock, i love all the songs. Surkamp makes a very good work in that album, his voice is really beautiful!!!

Great band, as mentioned Pampered Menial is a beauty. Bought the vinyl a long time ago. Don't agree much with you that they have more depth then Rush
![]() I know there are some people who have issues with Surkamp's voice but I like it!!
It is always a pleasure to hear their music.

If you ever drank Limoncello, you'll have to agree that both lemons and oranges have their charm. Same applies to Apfelschorle ![]() |

Love Pampered Menial, an amazing album. But going to the main issue…David Surkamp.. Yes, he has a terrible range as Geddy or John Anderson, but there’s a very big difference, David Surkamp has a unique technique that none of the other mentioned vocalists has. Both Geddy and Jon seem to believe they have a wonderful voice, David not, he knows his weakness. Being that fact he adapted the style of Edith Piaff to Rock, adding that extremely hard vibrato at the end of each word, you may like it or hate it, but it’s a hard work and he did it in a great way, his voice is not the more pleasant, but that style reminiscent of French Chanson is simply outstanding, he covers any defect and makes an advantage of it adding an incredible emotional charge and dramatics. I know it’s an acquired taste, but if you get it, you become a fan |

Yeah, he actually can sing. I also like the accompaniments and back up singers as well. Apparently the band is still together or it`s Surkamp solo. Just checked youtube and there were a few poor quality videos. In any case it seems that Surkamp still has his voice.

I guess I'm in the minority... I actually enjoy his voice, but I wasn't really blown away by the album. Maybe I need another listen or something.

Pampered Menial is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. One of less than a handful of albums that left me totally gobsmacked the first time I heard it. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing: A work colleague and his wife invited me over on a Friday night for dinner. We had a couple of cones and he stucka couple of tapes on. First was some Roxy Music as I remember. Then came an album I was unfamiliar with. After about half an hour I said to my friend "who is this, It's amazing? That chick singing has an astonishing voice. I almost fell off my chair when he repled "yes It is very special and what is amazing is the chick is actually a man" I almost fell of my chair. That was Feb 1987 and I remember it as if it were yesterday. Still one of my absolute top ten desert island albums.
AT the Tool of the bell is also very good but not evn close to PM. I used to go out with a wchick who loved that album. Don't worry about all the talk aof great Gig in the Sky being one of the best tracks to make love to: try At the Sound of the Bell on a loop.

Always loved Pavlov's Dog, right from the start.
I can definitely recommend their albums. I regard Pampered Menial and At The Sound Of The Bell to be on the same level. Has Anyone Seen Sigfried and Lost in America aren't quite as breathtaking, but still worthwhile.

I've seen them live three times over the past two years and it's always a fun concert, but I prefer when they're in a festival, because they've got enough classic to fill a short concert, but certainly not enough for a full length concert (roughly 2.5 hours, encore included), where they fill up time with uninteresting stuff >> time to get a beer
![]() ![]() Indeed if the public wants to hear the entirity of the first album and roughly half the second album, but little else really!!

It's his vocals, in large part, that elevates this album to something special. There's another band I like very much that springs to mind right now in large part due to a voice that I really like and others hate (actually, I could think of a great many) and that is Gravy Train. Angelo: regarding Limoncello, I'd thought that was a string instrument that is perfect for hitting sour notes. I can find enjoyment in many types of fruit and even fruity singers. Oh, and both Rush and Pavlov's Dog can be pretty sweet. To leave this on a sour note: I actually had a friend tell me in all seriousness that Surkamp is nothing but a Geddy Lee wanna-be when I played Pampered Menial, despite both Rush's and PD's debut albums coming out in '74 (as I recall), when in fact he's an Edith Piaff wanna-be (thanks to the bio for mentioning Piaff). |

Pampered Menial is probably my favorite album of all time. I heard 'Episode' and the entire thing just sounded... so ethereal. It was weird. I have some great memories of listening to that album for the first time.
I enjoy their second album too.
