Negativland | Live Brain - live album (digital only) accompanying their newest (physical) release, The World Will Decide, which itself is a companion to the prior year’s TrueFalse. I recently heard that none other than Laurie Anderson listed TWWD as one of her 5 favorite albums of all time! Whoa. They are really in a creative renaissance of sorts. For a band whose entire purpose has always revolved around truth and illusion in the mass media, these days must provide no end of ideas. Still impressive how they can piece hundreds of soundbites together into a conceptual whole much greater than the sum of its parts.
GY!BE | Yanqui UXO — my perfect album to accompany strung-out depression. I’m fine now. Guided by Voices | Suitcase (box set) — 100 otherwise unreleased songs on 4 CD. Just the tip of the iceberg for ol’ Bob Pollard. Viagra Boys | Welfare Jazz — love these guys. High energy Swedish post-punk with a great sax player, skillful keyboards, amazing drummer, colorful guitar work, distorted bass overdrive, and a singer who sounds like every song is the last rageful rant he’ll ever make. Jandek | Los Angeles Friday Jandek | The Ray Jandek | Dallas Thursday. — the last 2 of these were not too familiar to be and were just ok (he puts out so many albums I don’t expect all of them to be that good) but the first of these might be among my favorites. Live improvised guitar (by Will Toledo, of Car Seat Headrest, guesting for this show), with a bassist, maybe some keyboards, a drum machine (corny but somehow the dated “handclap” effects are charming), with either Sterling or his significant other Sheila reciting and/or singing lyrics of theirs. An acquired taste. King Crimson | Lizard - been very hooked on the title suite lately. Damn it’s majestic. Where did Fripp pull that from? Nothing else in their catalog sounds remotely like it. Moody Blues | Every Good Boy Deserves Favour - an old favourite Sebadoh | The Freed Weed — lo fi acoustic stuff from a couple of good indie songwriters. They went electric shortly after. I would be surprised to hear that any of these 40-odd songs were NOT recorded under the influence of weed. Chris Squire | Fish Out of Water — fantastic album every Yes fan should own. Equal quality to the great Yes albums of the mid 70s. Edited by HolyMoly - April 27 2021 at 19:08 |

Today I went the YES route and I wasn’t dissatisfied.
Yes— Close to the edge. ( I have to admit. A bigger application has really set in for me upon this listen. It has been awhile, but new feelings have come to be. ) Yes— Drama ( okay. Machine Messiah is awesome and quite possibly the heaviest song they’ve ever done. ;) |

Hi Samuel I spin that Crucis sucker from time to time and always end up digging it a whole lot more than I thought I would. It’s like a bluesier and more guitar-driven Yes-like music..and well the add-on of Spanish vocals makes it all the better for me...but I tend to love a little exotic vibe from the vocals ![]() I think my fave Vangelis from the 80s is Antarctica..Soil Festivities comes very close. Love the colours of that album..and I’m not necessarily talking about the cover art alone. It’s like stepping into an exploding paint factory (or maybe that’s just my synesthesia talking). Then again...I haven’t actually heard all of his 80s material. I still lack Mask fx...which is rated pretty highly to boot ![]() Oh yeah..gotta love those short 75 minute albums ![]() Quite apropos...I was literally flabbergasted when I popped in my cd of Ulver’s alphabet album (ATG....etc) and saw over 80 minutes of music ![]() I actually thought the physical limit for the media was somewhere around 77 minutes pr cd. I’m constantly reminded of why I love him whenever I jump eras within his discography...though granted I’m not reaching for his more classical adventures as I tend to find them a tad too err..wafting or something. But between the rest of his outings there’s at least some 5 or 6 different genretags we could slap on them. He’s about as eclectic as they get. Direct is a bit under the radar, I agree. Though...and I’m sorry if I’m stepping on your toes here buddy, but there are a couple of tracks on here that literally sound like the kind of muzak I’d hear at a Greek beach side restaurant with white plastic chairs and everything else painted deep satisfying blue. Man I love (and MISS!) those places...but yeah the cheesy 90s electronic-like muzak always got to me...and there are (just) a few tracks on here that sound like that ![]() The opening cut though always sends me straight off to another place. So gorgeous. Edited by Guldbamsen - April 27 2021 at 09:41 |

My favourite Vangelis album of the 80's is Soil Festivities ![]() I didn't keep track of my album listenings but I heard these new purchases multiple times: La Coscienza di Zeno - Una Vita Migliore (The production and vinyl mastering don't do justice to these classy compositions.) Bruno Pernadas - Private Reasons (The album I was expecting the most this year, a really short 75 minute album

Nice buddy. Vangelis is the true warrior of creating music that turns into love and peace. Know what other album I really like from ? direct. Very underrated. Some extremely clever arrangements done by the autodidact. :) |

This music though keeps him completely calm..and he looks like someone watching a brilliant movie) Waste Of Space Orchestra - s/t Circle - Pharao Overlord Crucis - Los Delirios Del Mariscal Aktuala - s/t Arbete & Fritid - Andra Serge Bringolf - Vision |

No problem Steve-o ![]() That two fer one deal is most likely the only way you’re going to get your hands on Hypothesis/The Dragon....and I’m almost certain that you’ll dig them. It’s not entirely the kind of Vangelis you get with Blade Runner but yeah more fusiony, odd-angled, saucy psychedelic and Kraut. I’m fairly certain that TG&S release is a compilation of the first album + Djunglens Lag...and well the one you span that I don’t know. I guess some times it pays off to get the remaster/extended mix/double thang over the studio album ![]() |

And Eliminator? Holy moly - that album sounds incredible even after all this time. Such a great fusion of guitar power and 80s sound that few bands could match. I love how even the guitar solos are so well thought out you can sing along with them too. Edited by HolyMoly - April 24 2021 at 17:32 |
