Supertramp
Crime of the Century
Even In The Quietest Moments
Crisis? What Crisis?
Three of my top albums ever! Strong, memorable and melodic songs that I never get tired of. Perfect!
Genesis
Foxtrot
Selling England by the Pound
Nursery Cryme
This trilogy got me truly interested in prog, and these three all remains as some of the best albums ever made to me!
Gentle Giant
Octopus
The Power & The Glory
In a Glass House
Again, three perfect albums from one of my all time favorite bands. GG is probably the prog band that is most "me", and these albums represents this well!
King Crimson
In The Court of the Crimson King
Lark's Tongues In Aspic
Starless and Bible Black
ITCOTCK was one of my first prog albums and it got me interested in complex music right away, Lark's and Starless might not top it musically, but they aren't far behind either!
Yes
Close to the Edge
Relayer
Fragile
Essential stuff, including some of my favorite songs ever (Gates of Delerium, Close to the Edge and Heart of the Sunrise)
Pink Floyd
Dark Side of the Moon
Wish You Were Here
Animals
Best Floyd albums to me, and essential to anyone who likes them. Dogs is one of my favorite songs!

Yes 1) Close To The Edge 2) Going For The One 3) The Yes Album

King Crimson: 1) Lizard - inaccessible, but after listening nearly 10 times, it's easily the most interesting album KC made 2) In The Wake Of Poseidon - feels like an improvement on the debut; "Pictures of a City" is just as good as (if not better than) "Schizoid Man", and of course, this album doesn't have 1/4 of its length dominated by worthless "noodling" (a la Moonchild) 3) In The Court Of The Crimson King - great album, but would have ranked higher if Moonchild was only 2-3 mins long and if another song (or two) were added for good measure. 4) Islands - haven't hear it that many times yet, but I'm liking it each time more 5) I feel sort of indifferent/the same about the rest of their albums between Islands and Discipline. They aren't bad, but not as good as I would have though with all of the praise they get.
Gentle Giant: 1) Gentle Giant [debut] - simply excellent! Every song is great (especially like their rendition of the final track, "the Queen.") 2) Acquiring The Taste - nearly as good as the debut, besides the title track and "Edge Of Twilight" 3) Octopus - pretty good, but not as enjoyable as the previous two (probably ties with Playing The Fool: Live)
Yes: 1) Close To The Edge - perfect Symphonic Prog album. Does everything right. 2) The Yes Album - flawless, but not as sublime as CTTE 3) Time And A Word - criminally underrated/overlooked, has some great songwriting and the instrumentation with the horns / strings works wonderfully ( I group this sound with UH's "Salisbury" title track and PF's "Atom Heart Mother Suite") 4) Yessongs - the length keeps me from listening to it as often as the others, but every track is worthwhile and some exceed the studio recordings (specifically "Heart Of The Sunrise" and "Yours Is No Disgrace"). 5) Probably a tie between Fragile and Relayer. The former is flawed with some tracks (the 2 songs shorter than "Cans and Brahms"), and I feel that "To Be Over" on the latter album is too lengthy for its own good... well only sometimes.
Pink Floyd (the albums besides Dark Side through The Wall): 1) Meddle - Atomsphere/mood perfection. Echoes is a defining moment 2) Atom Heart Mother - misunderstood, but definitely a classic. The title track is like a Symphonic "epic", and side B is excellent material 3) The Final Cut - what I consider to be the "3rd disc" to The Wall - Roger Waters' swan song for his involvement in PF.
Supertramp: 1) Crime Of The Century: perfection 2) Breakfast In America: Excellent, catchy songs while still being interesting to listen to 3) Paris: Covers the previous two albums fairly well (for some reason all of COTC is included except "If Everyone Was Listening") and includes some highlights from Crisis and Even In The Quietest Moments (well, except for "Give A little Bit")
Genesis: 1) Foxtrot - Classic of the genre, even if it just contained the music from side 2 2) Selling England - Really good album, but "I Know What I Like" has some irritating parts, and "More Fool Me" I sometimes skip 3) Nursery Cryme - Great album, just not as familiar with it (Although I haven't listened to my "Seconds Out" LP yet - could become a new favorite!)

This time with comments:
Keppa4v wrote:
Off the top of my head:
King Crimson: 1. Red My first touch of Prog, and their best album as a whole. Starless is my number one favourite song ever, another one I particularly enjoy is The Fallen Angel. 2. In the Court of the Crimson King The latter part of Moonchild does its best trying to ruin this otherwise perfect album, but the other songs (and the beginning of the aforementioned) are so damn strong that I can't call this less than a masterpiece. Also a very important album in my early progdays. 3. The Power to Believe Decades after their golden days (at least to me) they're back with another magnificent album. As close to a masterpiece as an album can be, but there's that little something missing that drops this one from five stars. 4. Islands Every song on the album improves on the previous one, starting with the very good Formentera Lady and ending up in the fantastic title track. Crimso at their most beautiful. 5. Starless and Bible Black Red was the first Crimso album I loved, but this one was the first I heard. I wasn't blown away, but Trio planted a seed that later grew when hearing Starless. The Night Watch is probably the second best Crimso song. Some other day this spot could well be taken by In the Wake of Poseidon.
Gentle Giant: 1. Gentle Giant 2. Free Hand 3. Octopus Can't really say anything clever about these yet, I'm just in the process of digging my way into the world of GG. This is the order I would place them at the moment, but tomorrow it might be different.
Yes: 1. Close to the Edge The only total Yes masterpiece in my book, also one of the best bass albums ever. 2. Fragile I borrowed this one from library a couple of years back when I heard all the praise going on about Yes, but it ended up being a very unpleasant experience. Can't really remember why anymore. I tried again a little later when I found it cheap in a used record store, and that was the start of my Yesfandom. Could be a masterpiece if they left most of the individual tracks in the studio and put on one more "real" track. 3. The Yes Album The hammond sound can get a bit boring in constant use, but the songs are all great, except for the only good Venture. Some magical Howe moments especially. 4. Magnification They're not all great songs, but there are lots of little things that touch me deeper than most of their other material ever. 5. Relayer Depending on the day could be Going for the One, Topographic or 90125.
Pink Floyd: 1. Wish You Were Here A perfect album from start to finish. It's weird that with so much great material over time, this is the only Floyd album I consider a masterpiece. There's always something missing or too much something, but this is a perfect piece of art. 2. Animals This one is still, after many many listens, opening up. Interesting compositions all the way. The last good album by Roger Floyd before lyrics kicked music to the ground. 3. Dark Side of the Moon A very enjoyable album, but at some points a bit too much weight is put on the lyrics at the cost of the music.
Genesis: 1. Wind and Wuthering 1. A Trick of the Tail A very tight race for the number one spot, and the last listens to these confirmed that they indeed did cross the finish line side to side. Both have three great songs with the rest of the album made from a little less engaging, but still always enjoyable material. 3. Trespass Selling England by the Pound I was going to say Trespass, but then I listened to both of these albums yesterday, and decided otherwise. Selling England might just be the most uneven album I've ever heard, mixing totally great songs with songs that set my teeth on edge, but the few moments of absolute brilliance are enough to lift it a bit above Trespass, although that album is much more consistent in quality.
I too haven't heard Supertramp and only about a half of Genesis catalogue.

First of all, a warm welcome to Bill ! Great post, and don't worry about being old.. I am just a few years younger than you are (I'm a woman btw), and here there is a very wide range of ages.
As to my own list, as I promised yesterday, here I go...
King Crimson:
1. In the Court... - Even if not their best album, I choose it both for its ground-breaking value, and for sentimental reasons... And for "Epitaph", of course.
2. Red - Probably their most accomplished effort... And it's got "Starless".
3. Lark's Tongues in Aspic - A bit weak on the vocal front, but extremely innovative and influential in a musical sense.
4. Discipline - The album that changed the face of prog. A controversial masterpiece.
5. The Power to Believe - Challenging and hard-edged as ever, the King is alive and kicking!
Pink Floyd:
1. A Saucerful of Secrets - Simply magnificent, and very, very progressive. A too-often neglected gem.
2. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - One of the best debut albums EVER, with an opener ("Astronomy Domine") to die for.
3. Animals - Bitter and haunting, with some of the best lyrics in rock music.
Genesis:
1. Selling England by the Pound - A flawed masterpiece, but still a great album, featuring three of the best prog tracks ever.
2. Wind and Wuthering - The last really valid effort from the band, when it's good it's really good.
3. Nursery Cryme - In my opinion, more varied and interesting than Foxtrot.
Yes:
1. Close to the Edge - A slice of prog heaven, as perfect an album as they come.
2. Fragile - Perhaps not as cohesive as CTTE, but awesomely complex and richly satisfying.
3. The Yes Album - A perfect balance of melody, accessibility and progressiveness.
4. Going for the One - Yes's forgotten masterpiece. "Turn of the Century" alone would be worth the price of the album.
5. Drama - A neglected gem. Forget about Jon Anderson, and listen to the music, for heaven's sake.
Gentle Giant:
1. In a Glass House - Needs to be listened to with attention, but a nearly perfect album.
2. Octopus - Same as above, though slightly more accessible.
3. Gentle Giant - A wonderful debut album that deserves far more credit than it usually gets. "Nothing at All" is a beautiful, intriguing piece of music.
Supertramp:
1. Crime of the Century - Another nearly perfect album, with an opener and a closer to die for.
2. Breakfast in America - Prog-pop? Yes, please - if it's as good as this! And listen to the lyrics... they are as smart as they come.
3. Brother Where You Bound - Their last great album, as good as their classics.

I hope you folks don't mind an old guys perspective. (I'll be 51 in May)
King Crimson
1. Court of the Crimson King (At that time there weren't many bands putting out stuff like this)
2. Red (Fripp as I'll always remember him)
3. Discipline (This probably isn't my third favorite but I wanted to give credit for keeping their sound out there yet changing with the times a little bit)
4. Starless and Bible Black (I'd buy this album again and again just for "The Great Deceiver")
5. Lark's (Great Headphones Album in the Dark)
Gentle Giant
1. In a Glass House (What can you say about breaking glass on an album)
2. Interview (I selected this one because like a few of my other choices This is an album and needs to be listened to as an album and not parts)
3. Octopus (This choice is again based on what was out there at the time. Both vocals and music were so different than most for this era)
Yes (Tough one for me since I've seen them over 40 times it's kind of like having to pick a favorite kid)
1. Close to the Edge (36 years later and it hasn't lost it's luster)
2. Yessongs (This may seem like a cop-out because I can't pick favorites from the 1st few albums it is )
3. Relayer (After seeing Yes a couple times and how the additions of Wakeman and Howe gave them a different feel especially live, I was concerned how the departure of Wakeman would effect them. Boy was I wrong. Moraz stepped in and sent them yet in another direction)
4. Tales (This album to me is a Symphony which should be up there with the old classical masters)
5. Magnification (I chose this one for 2 reasons #1 This band started in the sixties and here they are in the new century still exploring #2 Some of yes's stuff I've always thought teetered on being up there with the classics so the whole orchestra idea appealed to me)
Pink Floyd
1. Meddle (Another great Headphone album and another one of those albums that I'd buy again and again just for 1 song "One of these Days"
2. Animals (I actually had this and Wish You Were Here as a toss up but you said I can only pick 3)
3. Dark Side of the Moon (If Money wasn't on it I'd list list as my all time favorite. You have to understand there were bands selling out at this time and Money from a band like Pink Floyd was hard to swallow for long time fans)
BTW I Just turned Meddle on
Supertramp (Interesting choice for this list. I like them just interesting for this list)
1. Crime of the Century (fabulous Concert especially if you were, well you get my drift don't forget I caught the tail end of the sixties)
2. Crisis What Crisis (Last album before they went a little too far into top 40 tunes)
3. Even in The Quitest Moments ("Fools Overture" is a real great piece if you ask me and should have been kept off this album so they could have built a great album around it.)
Genesis (I can't believe you only want 3 choices. Could you make it any tougher?)
1. Foxtrot (Remember we're talking 1972 Sammy Davis Junior was #6 on Billboard with a song called "The Candy Man"and Wayne Newton was #11 and here comes Genesis with "Get'em out by Friday" an unbelievable story about the government putting a 4' restriction on humanoid height in order to fit twice as many in the same building site)
2. Trick of the Tail (This really isn't my 2nd favorite on musical merit, I chose this because it was a very strong album after losing one of the best Showmen (Peter Gabriel) at the time and there was concern whether they could survive without him.
3. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (I love concept albums and was in a trance at the concert)
