I used to go to this used and new record store called Ella Guru until they relocated and they always had a good selection reasonably priced Miles. That's where most of my Miles albums came from. I don't recall seeing that one (Valentine) there, or maybe I just passed it by. Putting that one on my wish list. Sometimes you just gotta step away from the prog.

| I added the album meaning to review it at some point...I just haven't been in a jazz mood lately...but today came a gloomy, cold rain, and that just did it for me. I've got Porgy and Bess, but I tend to prefer vocal versions to that musical (Billie Holiday's "I Love You, Porgy" is just amazing). Speaking of which, I may have to dig her out this afternoon.

| If you love Kind of Blue, this is necessary for you.
While it is extremely similar in sound, it relies less on the blues progressions that make up Kind of Blue (although they do a peppy, upbeat cover of "All Blues").
However, a 23-year-old Herbie Hancock is the star of this one, in my opinion...just wow.
There are some great liner notes in the latest version to read as well. Ron Carter wrote them (I believe). A lot of history behind this album, especially with the recent assassination of JFK...and the band members were pissed because they found out just before the show that it was a benefit and that they wouldn't be paid. Carter nearly walked out.
All said, it is magic.

^ Though I don't pretend to be an expert in jazz, that is the one album I'd put on if were asked, what is jazz? But, when you come to think of it, there's a lot of variety in jazz as there is in prog.

I don't have much Miles, but it is almost invariably recommended every time jazz is mentioned. Personally I love it.

I'm eating cream of wheat and hot tea, with a pot roast in the slow cooker. The babies are asleep, and it's raining out.
And I'm listening to this:

^ that's what makes this thread so fun. And get this, I use a two part random system to select what to load in my portable case and then what to put on. In this case I was finishing up my last random batch and this was last in line. And now:
Isn't that a triumvimouse?

Joking!!
It's excellent John, even better than Welcome to the Freakroom, which I loved. You and the guys should be really proud of this album, you really knocked it out of the park.
You seem to like King,an author who I really admire. You have done an epic about The Talisman(superb novel!) and now The Stand. What's next,an album about The Dark Tower? |
LOL! Cool! Thanks, you made my day! And if you write the first review, it'll make my year! LOL... Dave is the King fan, of course...I'll pass along the idea about the Dark Tower, although I had an idea to do a concept album based on the 13 generations of witches from Anne Rice's The Witching Hour, I still need to convince Dave, though...
