Genesis' Heathaze (and the best song on Duke).

This was the first song I thought of when I saw the question. Beautiful song, kind of uplifting in the end but still very sad.

I second this!

When I thought about this topic however, the first songs that came to mind were videogame soundtracks without any vocals, still hauntingly beautiful and sad:

And to give a sense of hopelessness you need the mixolydian mode.

Listen to Yes - fly from here. This is the reverse of the lydian mode. As well as Kamelot's anthem. This is the key to making you want to cry. with the phrygian mode, you have the installment of anger and outrage more so. This is different than the emotional reaction you get from the mixolydian. As the one used in fly from here by Yes. It is also equally beautiful to the lydian sibling but in a more hopeless way.

The phyrigian mode is to despair as the lydian mode is to hope. I got you, Opeth Damnation - to get rid the disease is the perfect despair/melancholic vibe you can possibly get. the key to this: Phrygian mode.

Guys I forgot about Kamelot's Anthem. You need to listen to it. It is by far from the saddest songs I have ever heard.

Check out this one - Morning Glory

I'm sorry, if you were right, I'd agree with you. Robin Williams.
