I started listen TOOL, i think it's better than DT, Genesis orYes, Star with KC is much hard that they think, stonebeard, i think, KC is  much sofisticate than DT or other, atn least i think that.
LTE is good, very good, but LTE 2 isn't so good.
there`re Chilean band good like Exsimio (www.exsimo.cl), if you go to "Audio" (the page is in Spanish) you can heard the first cd full, and demos of the second, recently it left the oven, is good, or Ergo Sum, but no try with Akineton Retard, dont try!!! (http://www.mylodonrecords.com/, many chilean group, mexican, and someones of the c**try that is beside Chile)
Symphny X??, i think they sucks, like Rapsody, another group i fund only one song and it's very god is 4/3 de trio, a french group, and a new gruop is Distand Dream http://www.distantdream.com/home/
or you can go to www.magnacarta.net, here are many proyect of dt and other group,
ahh, and, of course, Emerson, Lake & Palmer is an excellent choice
and if you like DT, don´t heard Train, it really suck, i almost thing DT was finished when i hear it.

Musically they're also great! One of the most inventive "punk" bands. I'll see the thread.

And some more suggetions: if you like Zappa, maybe Captain Beefheart and Adrian Belew's solo stuff will appeal to you?

Except one part with SYmphony X, they are really boring, even though I do like their albums, it gets really old.

Let's try Spastic Ink, Threshold or Evergrey

Good choices - let's add some DT side projects here - Liquid Tension Experiment, James LaBrie's, John Petrucci's and Jordan Rudess' solo stuff, OSI, Frameshift, oh, and Explorers' Club

Maybe also Chroma Key, to complement the suggestions above and to couterweigh them a little...

It's actually the opposite.

Funnily enough there's a thread around here that states a solid case for the Dead Kennedys being a very interesting band...

@ Fantomas

Hey, don't go there. Ivan loves Genesis as much as you love Fantomas and sticks up for it as you do for your stuff. Ivan's a good guy, really it's unfair to call him names.

ive been listening to prog for about 3 yrs now, and wish to get more in depth. its daunting though, and i would appreciate band suggestions.

i am an enormous fan of: dream theater, yes, pink floyd

Fates Warning, Symphony X, Psychotic Waltz, Spock's Beard, Anathema, RPWL,

and a lesser fan of: genesis, frank zappa

Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips, Frogg Cafe, Mike Keneally (solo and with his band Beer for Dolphins), Primus (not prog, but Larry Lalonde is influenced by Zappa's playing)

and i have heard at least 5 albums from each of the preceding bands, except for zappa.

thank you

King Crimson would be a great start to see what you like in prog!

You could try some kraut rock ( Tangerine Dream, Neu, Klaus Schulze, Can, Kraftwerk)

If you can, try those italian prog bands: Premiata Forneria Marconi , Quella Vecchia Lacanda, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, etc.

Flower Kings (yes-like happiness)

Eloy ( space rock à la Pink Floyd)

Gentle Giant, Caravan, etc etc!

About Porcupine Tree, try In Abstenia, even though its their heaviest approach towards Prog, its my favorite.
