The Judge - 2014
Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Billy Bob Thornton There have been many movies about a son/daughter moving away because of differences with a father/mother and then returning home because of a family crisis. In this movie I did not mind the repetition because it was done so well. Hank Palmer (Downey) is a successful lawyer who returns home for his mother's funeral. We discover right away that he has issues with his strong-willed father, Judge Palmer (Duvall) that are revealed later in the film. As Hank was boarding the plane to leave after the funeral he receives a message that the judge is being charged with murder in a hit and run accident. The judge refuses to let Hank defend him and hires a small time local lawyer who is no match for the sharp prosecutor played by Thornton who is going for first degree murder. Hank eventually takes over and the trial begins. In the meantime, Hank has reunited with his old girlfriend played by Vera Farmiga (one of my favorites). The judge claims that he can't remember the accident and Hank believes that his recovering alcoholic father has started drinking again due to the death of his wife. Hank then learns that his father has been hiding the fact that he has terminal cancer and the chemotherapy is causing memory loss. Although Hank makes a strong case the judge is found guilty and sentenced to four years in prison. Eventually Hank is able to get the judge released because of his illness and the two begin to resolve the issues that have kept them apart for twenty years. Although this is not the type of movie I usually buy I thought it was very well done and I would recommend it to anyone. Vincent D'Onofrio and Jeremy Strong play solid roles as Hank's older and younger brothers. Vera Farmiga, a great actress, is excellent in her role and keeps Downey on his toes throughout the movie. |

Do you recall the early Schwarzenegger version of Hercules? He looked like he was in his early twenties and his voice was dubbed.

Kingsman - The Secret Service
It's not often a movie will take me by surprise - but this one sure did. From the trailer I though it was going to be a teenage Alex Ryder kind of flick but I couldn't have been more wrong. It's violent, crass, refined, silly, serious, unpredictable ... the movie is a gem. I've never seen a mix like this work before. Usually I'm left with a sense of: who did they think this would appeal to - but not this time. It's no surprise it was made by the same studio as Kickass .. anyway - highly recommended. Quantum of Solace I've watched this a couple of times before - and until now I never realized how weird this was for a Bond film. I'm not surprised that most people didn't like it - this was very different for a Bond. The cinematography, the sound design and the editing screamed art film, in contrast to the intense, insane action scenes. (some of the best ever filmed) There is so much I like about Quantum but it's unsettling - like watching 2 different films at once, when you were expecting a third. |

I'm sure you're talking about the Lou Ferrigno film since your comment certainly would apply. I remember coming across it years ago on cable and I changed the channel after about ten minutes. It was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards and won in two categories, Ferrigno for Worst New Star and Sybil Danning for Worst Supporting Actress. There was also a 1985 sequel with Ferrigno again in the leading role. Go figure.

Hector & the Search of Happiness
haven't seen a good comedy in quite a while and this one delivered, I liked it a lot. Simon Pegg + a great cast of well-known actors appearances. |

The Watcher in the Woods - 7/10
Exists - 6/10 (the man-in-the-suit bigfoot was best part of the movie) Network - 7/10 (In retrospect this movie comes off awfully pretentious, all the yelling and goofy speeches... pay attention to us, this is important!) Edited by mithrandir - March 01 2015 at 05:29 |

Birdman - Michael Keaton
I don't know, this movie didn't jump out and grab me like I expected it to. I'm a long time fan of Michael Keaton and enjoyed the variety of older roles he played in Beetlejuice, One Good Cop, Multiplicity, Pacific Heights and Batman. The movie has an excellent cast and they all performed well but the story line was nothing new with a washed up actor trying to make a comeback. Add to that the Birdman alter ego thing (if that's what it was) didn't reach out to me like I think it was supposed to. The plain icing on the tasteless cake for me was the scene where Riggan's daughter rushes to the window and looks down expecting to see her father splattered on the pavement below. When she doesn't see him she looks up at the sky and a smile comes across her face. Before I put the DVD under the short leg of a wobbly table I'll wait a week and give it a second viewing.

Nightcrawler - Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, Riz Ahmed
Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a petty thief with a conman mentality who discovers that he can make a living filming accident scenes and crime scenes and selling the footage to local news networks. He soon becomes good enough to often beat the police to a crime scene. If necessary, he would rearrange bodies or evidence to create more dramatic footage. Rene Russo plays a news director at a local station who is amazed at Bloom's ability to be first on the scene and to shoot the goriest footage and he becomes kind of a celebrity around the station. He eliminates his competition (Bill Paxton) by rigging the guy's van and then filming the near fatal crash that he caused. He sets up his "gofer" assistant to get gunned down by a triple homicide suspect and films the whole thing including the suspect being killed by the police. Lou Bloom is not a nice guy and you keep waiting for him to get what he deserves. This is just the kind of strange quirky movie that I like. All of the actors were excellent and Gyllenhaal gave an outstanding performance.

^^ I personally like this type of movie and I remember very clearly when this was in the news every day.
I thought Renner did a very good job in the type of role that he is not necessarily known for. Barry Pepper, Andy Garcia and Ray Liotta were very good in their cameo appearances. I would recommend this movie especially if you like films about conspiracies and their backlashes. |

Kill The Messenger - Jeremy Renner + many cameos
Renner plays investigative reporter Gary Webb who blew the whistle on the CIA's drugs for money for guns operations to fund the Contra rebels in Nicaragua during the Reagan administration. The CIA dodged a bullet on this one because major media outlets like the Washington Post, New York Times and Los Angeles Times began a personal smear campaign against Webb probably because they had been "scooped" by a small time newspaper. This took the spotlight off of the CIA. Sources began changing their stories and some claimed that they never met with Webb and his paper released a story saying that they may have had the facts wrong. His career was over, his family was broken up and he was living in a small apartment where he was eventually found dead with two bullets in the head. Even though it is physically impossible to shoot yourself in the head twice, his death was called a suicide. A few years later the CIA admitted to having dealings with the Contra rebels but the story was overshadowed by the Clinton / Lewinsky scandal. |

Casino Royal
I've seen it several times and it still packs the same punch as the first viewing. Hands down the best title sequence of all time (and not one naked girl) Great impactful tune as well.. This is the Bond that should have been from day one. The first 20 odd films were fun, set some silly standards - were entertaining foreplay.. But now we've got the real deal. |

Tomorrow Never Dies The World Is Not Enough Die Another Day well, that's it for the Brosnan Bonds Michelle Yeoh The end of Q Snappy John Cleese Some lacklustre villains Halle Berry in a bikini Some horrible opening theme songs. Moneypenny's VR fantasy Brosnan faired pretty well as Bond. Nothing outstanding but he didn't embarrass himself either. The series definitely needed a reboot - a fresh start with balls. Time for Daniel Craig. Edited by Walton Street - February 26 2015 at 07:07 |

Whiplash
Extraordinary look at music students and their drill-sergeant teacher, Whiplash is to the pro music academy experience as The Paper Chase was to law school, features charged performances from JK Simmons and Miles Teller, and has an astute, learned script from Damien Chazelle. As a young jazz drummer buckles under the pressure of intensive schooling, he is brought along by a legendary master instructor and in the tradition of a Chinese kungfu flick, is beaten and molded into the player he is capable of being. Packed with fantastic jazz and Big Band compositions, ferociously entertaining, the film has been criticized for not understanding jazz, which misses the point entirely. Best picture of 2014 in this writer's opinion. |
