I voted for the Robert Wyatt, one of the most beautiful songs of the rock era.  Matching Mole's O Caroline should have been on the list, as well as Peter Blegvad's How Beautiful You Are.  My absolute choice, though, would have been Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye by Cole Porter.  Annie Lennox does a killer version.

because it's not a ballad

Here is a definition of a ballad...

Ballads have a long history in music, poetry, and literature. While the meaning of ballads and their form has continuously shifted over time, we ultimately associate all ballads with some form of storytelling. For example, a ballad can be a slow, mournful love song—but it can also be a silly, light poem.

A ballad just has to tell a story, it does not have to be sentimental or romantic. No better story told than "Imagine"

That would make almost any song that isn't 'pop' a ballad. Most people take a ballad as being about love otherwise we just have good songs. Anyway Imagine is not telling a story at all, its a wish list. Great song though.

Interesting list!  It's KC's "Epitaph" for me.  A wonderfully conceived piece of music.

Agreed. Relatively few songs on the list are ballads by any measure.

A ballad is  a narrative in the 3rd person. So I once learned.

So ...Bob Dylan - Hurricane. Hey it's got violin. It must be prog.

Or the Dead Kennedy's The Prey. And no, it is not punk either...

Oh, I see.  I thought you were giving him credit for writing the piece.  My apologies!

Well you might have your point but I prefer Young's Chrome Dreams II recording of it, by far, let alone its gorgeous mellow country intro which dates from his masterpiece "Old Ways" sessions - an all-time favourite album in my book. Nuff said

From the poll list it'd easily be PF's Wish You Were Here, easy choice. Now, how come S&G Beatles and Lennon be choices in a "prog" poll?  As it seems, time changes everything LOLLOL

My vote is for others, if I may....
1) Any one of these timeless greats:
Bob Dylan - Blowing In The Wind
Cat Stevens - Morning Has Broken
Billy Joel - Piano Man

2) Honourable mentions to the Allman's Melissa & Neil Young's Beautiful Bluebird Star

It wouldn't be my choice for my very favourite ballad, but it's nice to see someone giving this little song some recognition. I do love it, and it's got some really beautiful vocals.

To be honest with you guys... around 2013-2014 Genesis and King Crimson used to be my top 2 favorite bands but over time, those two bands become the top 2 bands I can't even attempt to listen to again and as of now I still can't. Especially the Peter Gabirel era Genesis. The quote endquote "theatrical" vocals drive me nuts.

So I'm voting for Sea Song, which did stand the test of time for me.

Also if I were to pick something not on this list... I'd pick either The Wanderer by Evership or Depois L'Automne (hope I spelled it right) by Harmonium. I must say however that if you asked me the same exact question tomorrow, I would pick different songs.

Welp, there are definitely way too many great prog ballads out there it seems.

Sea Song, just over Aspirations, Mad Man Moon and Formentera Lady.

Note: If the quantity of those rancid ads on this page would be reduced to acceptable proportions, I would gladly appreciate this.
