The mighty King’s X, over the mighty Dream Theater - although neither of these albums are favourites of mine by these great bands….

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Dream Theater from the options although Par Lindh Project - Gothic Impressions is easily my favourite album for this year (not in either polls). ELP's sad demise is confirmed on In The Hot Seat. They then return a few years later to tour America (with Dream Theater and Tull) and it's like that album never happened. Once in a bands career is enough but to do it twice takes the biscuit!

^ I know, but it's no problem. I'm happy to see music appreciated in polls I make, to discover music new-to-me, and hopefully to have some others maybe find something they like or that piques their interest. Been checking out various music by the band, and when I listened to this I remembered having heard it. - Greg So much music to hear, so little time. |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Well, you didn't have to do that on my account Logan. Thanks though. I really just wanted to bring some attention to them more than anything else. Volume 2 is imo one of the best prog albums of the 90s.

I did add Mastermind to the next poll, and omitted Lush (much as I like Lush). I really got into certain Prog in the 80s and was introduced to some Prog in the 70's but it was not until the 2000s that I deeply started exploring the music. In fact a lot of what you will find being my favourites in topics I make I only got into in recent years, I am more excited generally by that which I discovered in recent years than that I have know for 20, 30 or 40 years. I don't actually think of myself as a Prog fan, it's more like I like lots of progressive music, music found under the Prog umbrella, or with a relation to categories we have in PA. In the 90s I was most;y listening to New Age music (lots of Kitaro), Japanese music while living in Japan, and soundtracks, some classic rock like Pink Floyd, lots of classical music, and some jazz. I was mostly listening to music from before the 90s in the 90s, and it's like my tastes used to be behind the times on the whole. I was not so up on contemporary music as I am now. Now my tastes have caught up with the times more, I know and appreciate way more from many decades, and I love lots of albums from every year of the past 65 years. Another thing to remember is that we are so international, so a band that might seem popular for someone, say, in the Eastern United States, might not be popular elsewhere as well as within certain niches/ subcultures. Of course people have different tastes, so what is good for one person to know more of won't suit another. It does not bother me if what I like is popular, but of course I do want to have people who share the same tastes as me here, and if music is more popular than I am more likely to be able to see them in concert and get more music by them. A favourite band of mine in the 90'S is Swans but despite it rating so well at RYM, I know I'm in the minority at the PA forum when it comes to not only loving Swans, but loving that period of Swans. And that's one of the more popular bands I like. Edited by Logan - November 25 2024 at 18:19 |

Well, I was a fan of prog rock in the 90s (although I did take a break from it for a little while then) and so I remember them and I still think some of their stuff was great. They are one of those bands (but not the only one) who has been lost in time so to speak. But it kind of pisses me off that other bands from the era get so much more attention and recognized than they do (Discipline) for example. I'll admit that if I first discovered prog in 2002 (or later) I probably would never have even heard of them. Being that a lot of people(mostly younger folks) discovered prog after 2002 (that's just an arbitrary date it could be a few years later or earlier) I can understand them not knowing about them. Probably more people should know about the band Ritual too for similar reasons but they aren't as neglected as Mastermind.

Popularity, or lack thereof, I guess. Probably the first part does not need saying, but it wouldn't have been in part one anyway as this only gees up to L, but it's not one I have planned for part two either nor was at on a considerably longer list than I made. If it's consistently left out of polls, my guess is that it's just not very well-known or very highly thought of. I do know the name from the forum here. If you look at rateyourmusic, it has mediocare ratings and not many ratings: https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/mastermind if you look at ProgArchives, again not very popular: https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=237 I guess another question could be, why is not better known or acclaimed? I don't know, but there always so much good and popular music to cover. Was this band a biggish/ acclaimed name in the 90s because I only recall hearing of it as this forum? EDIT: by the way, I do immediately recognise the cover-art for Tragic Symphony, but then I have a decent memory for bands that get mentioned in the forum and images. Think it has been in a poll before.... We are all influencers at this forum so if you build more topics where you can share Mastermind music, well that might lead to people discovering and loving the music. ![]() EDIT: I do like to try to work with this community and please, so I will add it to the next one, sorry Lush, but works well starting with M. Why is Mastermind always left out of these 90s polls?
