He hated the usual idea of prog (what we could call symphonic prog), which is why, so far as I know, he didn't like any of the bands which played music which later became a prog cliche (Yes, ELP, Genesis), but he did like music doing new things, which is I guess why he was a fan of VdGG and Soft Machine amongst others. That's not to say Yes weren't doing new things, but I think his hatred at prog outweighed his liking of good music in these instances

Yes he was totally anti prog, I doubt he would have even considered VDGG prog anyway.
