Listen to 4 and a half hours of music every day? :/ I'd rather not go deaf, thank you very much... Unique thread though. :-) I have lots of grains, and some fruits and vegatables, and some fat. (I haven't listened to Zeppelin in so long though) No meat (Metal is too loud) and diary. (haven't gotten to post-rock yet)

Actually very well done.
I don't really follow it... But in theory I agree.

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

You forgot carbonhydrates and vitamines. No good prog diet without the carbonhydrates of Kraut and the vitamines of Zheul.

Nah, listened to those "grains" a lot as a youth. They're the more occasional ones now. Also, they were "pop" in their time. But, yes, everybody should listen to more varied music, even non-prog. :)

I am so tired of people lumping them in there. I'll take that kind of fattening material over any of this high cholesterol nonsense
![]() Porcupine Tree, The Flower Kings, The Mars Volta, Riverside, Radiohead, The Tangent, and the Ozric Tentacles. Depending on your definition of prog (or fruit), such borderline acts as Coheed and Cambria, The Flaming Lips, and Muse may qualify for this group.

Heh, according to that nowadays I mostly "eat meat and vegtables." I really have been intending to reintroduce grains to my diet on a regular basis but there is so much good Fusion/Metal out there, haha! |
||
If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks!

Well, I'd like to think to most of us here have rather healthy prog-diets...it does no good to listen to just prog-metal, or just classic prog...the real experiance comes form the balance of all types of prog!

Oh boy, you made me feel really healthy - I'm in pretty good shape according to your pyramid since I discovered Canterbury two weeks ago...
Then again, I spent quite a few hours in the kitchen, especially on weekends, so I know at least a bit about balanced diets ![]() |

Do you have a healthy prog rock diet? You better double-check with this one-of-a-kind prog-rock food pyramid to make sure you are getting the selct number of servings of each genre of prog-rock!
Serving size = 15 minutes Serving size should be taken with a grain of salt; be sure to keep all amounts relative to each other (i.e. twice as many grains as anything else, equal meat and dairy, etc.) Grains = 70's Classic Prog Servings: 6-11 The most important prog-rock in your diet. This group includes generous portions of Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Rush, and others. One should get at least an hour and a half (the equivalent of two full vinyls) of classic prog a day. Fruits = Modern Prog Servings: 3-4 To be healthy is to keep up with the latest changes in the prog-rock scene, as well as staying up to date with those (us?) kids today. This group may consist of Porcupine Tree, The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, The Mars Volta, Riverside, Radiohead, The Tangent, and the Ozric Tentacles. Depending on your definition of prog (or fruit), such borderline acts as Coheed and Cambria, The Flaming Lips, and Muse may qualify for this group. Vegetables = Jazz-rock/ Fusion/ Canterbury/ Avante-garde Servings: 3-5 The hardest music to digest is also the healthiest! Veggies can inlcude Frank Zappa, Caravan, Miles Davis, Return to Forever, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Hatfield and the North, The Tangent, and other, more obscure bands. The more obscure the band, the healthier it is! Meat and Protein = Prog-Metal Servings: 2-3 A good prog diet must have contain some meat for those bones, and the strong, loud world of prog-metal fits the bill perfectly. Make sure to balance somewhat fatty meats like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Shadow Gallery, and Vanden Plas with slightly more cerebral fare, such as Pain of Salvation, Tool, Devin Townsend, and Opeth. Dairy = Neo-Prog/ Post-Rock Servings: 2-3 Generous heapings of neo-prog and post-rock build strong bones! Make sure to inlclude some IQ, Marillion, or Pendragon with some post-rock such as Godspeed You! Black Emporer, Sigur Ros and Mogwai, in your diet. Fats, Sweets, and Others = Pop-Prog/ Borderline prog/ Non-prog Servings: Use (listen to) sparingly Every now and then its great to kick back and have some chocolate cake or a candy bar; it is also quite pleasing to hear some AOR or soft prog every once and a while. But keep the listening to Asia, Kansas, Journey, Styx, 80s Yes, and others to a minimum. It is acceptable to get away with listening to these, as well as other bands not normally considered prog on a regular basis; just make sure to fill all the requirements for the other food groups! And there you have it! The prog-rock food pyramid. How is your music diet? Personally, I could use a few more veggies and dairy items (much like real life!). |
