Topic: Best of "Blue Oyster Cult" Posted: February 01 2008 at 13:11 |

Sorry to veer the topic off course for a sec, but seeing as how this whole poll'll probably be seen by BOC fans, I has a question:
which would be a good album to start with (or their best, whichever)
I've heard a bunch of songs of theirs, but only have one (3 chances to guess it and the first two don't count)
Thanks for the help! |
Either of the first three albums are a good place to start. I went with the debut and then went in order (T&M...Secret Treaties). The first one is very raw and dark; production-wise, it sounds like there's five years between the first two. They all kick a lot of ass, so you can't lose.

The pair Flaming telepaths/Astronomy is a killer one!
Vote for the first though.

I voted for This Ain't the Summer of Love but my favourite is Before the Kiss, a Redcap.

I am of the firm opinion that Secret Treaties is the pinnacle of BOC-dom.
"Astronomy" FTW.

(Don't Fear) The Reaper. Read Norman Mailer's The Executioners Song if you wonder why this was my choice.

"Clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst, out at you from their hiding place..."
I like Astronomy from that list
Last Days of May would be right up there too, and Transmaniacon MC...yea I'm partial to the first 3 albums 'cuz those are the only ones I know well.

Been a BOC fan for years. Secret Treaties and Spectres are definitely my favourite albums. Astronomy is a great track, as is "I Love the Night" and "Nosferatu".
Used to give the neighbours serious grief with Extra-Terrestrial Live in the 80's.

HUGE BOC fanatic here... I have all their albums, and that includes that pre-BOC St. Cecilia Recordings reissue that was released a couple of years back. I'm seeing them live (for the first time believe it or not!) in January... I can't wait. Because I'm such a dork, I'm going to list my favorite BOC songs per-album...
BLUE OYSTER CULT - Transmaniacon MC - Cool, lo-fi rocker with almost-whispered vocals, an eerie vibe (as was par-for-the-course of their early material) and check out the neat guitar line during the chorus!
TYRANNY AND MUTATION - Wings Wetted Down - Most people favor the hard-rockign first side of this LP but I'm in love with the moody pieces on the second side, particularly this gem!
SECRET TREATIES - Flaming Telepaths - Wacked-out sci-fi rocker (the first of many) that I put as the climax of this album before Astronomy lulls you back into a relaxed state... the synth solo is amazing!
AGENTS OF FORTUNE - Revenge of Vera Gemini - You have to be a total BOC dork not to rate Reaper as your favorite cut on this classic... I always liked this dark track, featuring guest-vocals by Patti Smith.
SPECTRES - Nosferatu - Could have easily gone to I Love the Night as Well, but I find the piano runs through this song to be very creepy, and I'm a sucker for horror movies anyway.
MIRRORS - The Vigil - Hard rocking song from a soft-rocking LP, featuring an amazing classical guitar segment in the middle... definitely their most underrated epic, it's ripe for a re-appraisal.
CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS - Unknown Tongue - Zany psycho-sexual S&M-laced track with a funny ending, this has catchy vocal melodies, some great riffs, and an overal unique sound that I've yet to hear duplicated.
FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN - Joan Crawford - C'mon, it's got to be this track... who doesn't love a song with a chorus that proclaims that the title character has risen from the grave? My eyes have gone the color of frozen meat...
THE REVOLUTION BY NIGHT - Eyes on Fire - Neat little piano ballad. It's catchy. I like it.
CLUB NINJA - Spy in the House of the Night - A lot of close-calls on this much maligned BOC album... I had to go with this track, but it could have easily went to a couple of others as well.
IMAGINOS - Blue Oyster Cult - Slick remake of Subhuman, as it were... this is BOC's best album, so I love all the songs, but something about this being the eponymous track for the band just makes it seem like a right choice.
HEAVEN FORBID - Harvest Moon - OK, an obvious choice for once, but it's a great tune. BOC's comeback album has some pretty good tracks... I almost picked X-Ray Eyes, as it's a return to their sci-fi schlock-rock that I love!
CURSE OF THE HIDDEN MIRROR - The Old Gods Return - A hard rocking tune on this, their latest album. I'm not as familiar with this as others, but I recall the second side being slightly better than the first.
