I like em both, but I think Deadwing has the edge. The title song, and Anesthisize are the only songs that are really sticking with me off of Fear. Again, I like em both, but sorry there is NOTHING like Start of Something Beautiful on FOABP. That song kills...

Deadwing has a lot more songs that I think will end up being fillers for live shows.

^ Well by half of the music, I meant soloing, Belew gets 4 or five solo's and Ackerfeldt gets one, that makes up for around half of the solo's on the album

But I do agree with you about arriving somewhere but not here, I think that may be my favirote PT song ever so far, The vocal harmonies on the bridges are beautiful!

Well, I don't hear the lack of maturity on Deadwing.  I think it's a fantastic album, and Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is one of their best songs.

As for the guest musicians, yes it seems like they do more on Deadwing than on Fear of a Blank Planet (I'm not sure of everything they do on Deadwing), but saying that they do half the work on Deadwing is a huge exaggeration.

As much as I love Porcupine Tree, I don't think Deadwing and FOABP have the same deep thought as their older albums do. It seems as if everything pre Deadwing was made why they were in a "dream state" while Deadwing and FOABP were made in a more awake and present state of mind. If anyone knows what I mean...

Belew and Ackerfeldt do play more on Deadwing than Lifeson and Fripp do on FOABP but they hardly are making more than half the music.

I personally like that Steven Wilson has guest musicians on his albums.  He has chosen some of the best in the business.  Genius if you ask me.

I also happen to like FOABP a little better than Deadwing - almost on par with In Absentia.  I do not think that there is a lack of maturity though.  Far from it.

I just got deadwing last weekend, and after quite a few listens, I have heard a major differences musically and lyrically. First I should say I am really digging deadwing, so dont think I'm bashing it.

First thing I noticed was the lack of maturity in deadwing compared to "fear". There are like four time as many solo's and the music is more commercially accepting sounding (not that it actually is). The lyrics also sound a bit more mainstream on Deadwing, especially with those wannabe classic rock songs like Shallow, halo and open car.

Another is the amount of guest musicians, in deadwing the guests do twice as much work as they do in fear of a blank planet. Although Belew and Ackerfeldt do an excellent job, I believe the band should be making half of their own music.

This topic may be a bit late, but I just got deadwing. What do you all think?
