Abandon. Its a good album but not their greatest. Better than Slaves and Masters that album sounds dull and boring and all the songs sound the same. It just drifts past you.

Slaves and Masters superiors the ugly Abandon but don't know if it beats Purpendicular or Bananas or ROTD.

This is similar to asking me whether I'd prefer being mauled & eaten by a lion, a tiger, a grizzly bear or a great white shark.

I voted "Slaves And Masters", but my all time favourite is "Burn"

I have to go with Abandon. i like this album mainly because i like Steve Morse's and Jon Lord's work here. And obviously I prefer Gillan to JL Turner. Anyday.

I think DP is overrated because all albums has some good track ( and some masterpiece) but the whole album is not quality consistent
On the other hand, their career were not lineal so that impact theri music...egos, egos before the band

The question should be re-phrased into "Which Is The Worse DP album", but I admit than even so it would be difficult to answer that question.
Here are some excerpts of my reviews for these albums (I have reviewed around 35 DP albums) :
About Slaves And Masters : "This is the Purple worst release. Stay away form this one. A single star."
About Abandon : "In "Abandon", there are eleven prog moments. Each break between the numbers. Between them, awful heavy metal songs (not even hard rock) for the huge majority of the tracks". "This "work" is only equalled by the infamous "Slaves & Masters". Same crap, same rating : one star.
I guess you had the idea.
Cheers.

Choosing an album between these 2 is like choosing between UNION and TORMATO from YES.
But i think ABANDON is definitely the worst DP album ever.
I like KING OF DREAMS and a few more on SLAVES AND MASTERS
Yes the last 2 are quite good!

Blackmore over-rated? By whom? As for the "flat-note" thing.......well, I'm stunned. Blackmore is streets ahead of any other player of his genre, some examples that spring to mind would include No No No (Fireball), Lazy (Machine Head), the solos from A200 (Burn) & Hold On (Stormbringer), or, the sublime Gates of Babylon (Rainbow - Long Live Rock n Roll)
Whilst Don Airey may well be a good keyboard player, he's not in Lords league. Mr Lord is the King of Hammond.
