Topic: 3 bands that are most likely to bore non-progheads Posted: July 27 2009 at 00:16 |
Well, one of my exs said that ''Animals'' put her to sleep, yet she adores ''The Wall''. This makes sense how?
Aside from that, though, I've never heard of Pink Floyd 'boring' anybody. But oh well.
Erm . . . my list.
1. Genesis (They bore me to tears sometimes, honestly) 2. Anglagard 3. Ayreon

In my experience, this is just as accurate for most non progheads. As specific examples, certain material from Soft Machine (specifically, Third through at least Fifth) seems as if it'd bore most non progheads, probably Ash Ra Tempel, and...Yatha Sidra, maybe.

A better question would be: How many bands are NOT likely to bore non-progheads?

How about Nosound? Great band but they bore me to tears! I can only listen to them before bed.

Most non proggers I know are either bored or irritated by most things I play them. Floyd come off lightly in that regard, and actually seem to appeal to most non proggers I know. Thats because most of their music is easy to digest, and doesn't require tem to concentrate on whats going on.
Generally, the worst reactions have been evoked by the following, for the reasons given:
Yes (Gay vocals and songs too long) Genesis (Phil Collins) Gentle Giant (comedy rock without the humour) Jethro Tull (Frankly ridiculous and very 'un-cool') King Crimson (pointless noise; induces headaches and nausea) Moody Blues (my mum likes them)
Some people just dont get it... |

But the list can go on and on.
I chose only popular bands
Bands like Yes, Genesis and Floyd don't count as they had commercial appeal a tsometime. |
So did ELP |
Not really. |
Oh really?
By April 1974, ELP were top of the bill during the California Jam Festival, pushing co-stars Deep Purple to second billing. ELP's California Jam performance was broadcast nationwide in the US and is often seen as the summit of the band's career. |
ELP was commercially successful. End of debate.

Genesis: On the basis that they don't immediately seem to stand out as an excellent band.
ELP: I find myself having trouble getting this band myself. Lots of noodling and strange classical forms.
GYBE!: For their slow repetitive themes that last forever.

I certain you are wrong on all three, especially Can. These are bands I've experienced have great crossover potential tastewise. Its more the progheads that don't get them.

You got me! Being a prog head I just listed the three bands that were hardest for me to get into.

don't really know if this counts, Brian Eno, only his own works, not collaborations with other artists.
I do love him though

1. Gentle Giant 2. Camel 3. Van Der Graaf Generator
Bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and I think even ELP back in the 70's, appealed to a lot of people who weren't exactly prog fans.

1. Genesis (the second half of SEBTP bores the heck out of me... and yes I've TRIED to like it)
2. King Crimson (most non-progheads need lyrics, most of KC's material is instrumental)
3. Rick Wakeman (just 'cause)

Well, according to my non-proghead boyfriend (so he keeps telling me!), Dream Theater are boring - he "doesn't get" them! However, he's mad on Jethro Tull and Hawkwind, he's seen numerous Floyd tribute bands (always singing along) and he's coming with me to see IQ for the second time in October. I'd class him a semi-proghead.
