Really not a fan of Opeth, but Still Life is brilliant (almost 5-star for me)

1. Still Life

then much further down...

2. Blackwater Park
3. Ghost Reveries
4. Damnation
5. Heritage

You've gotta go listen to My Arms Your Hearse, Deliverance, and Morningrise.

I'll get on that soon! Which do you recommend I start with?

If you're favorite was Ghost Reveries, I'd say pick up My Arms, Your Hearse. "When" is a top ten Opeth track for sure.

1.  Deliverance
2.  Blackwater Park
3.  Ghost Reveries
4.  Damnation
5.  Watershed
6.  Still Life
7.  Heritage
8.  MAYH
9.  Morningrise
10.Orchid

For me the top 3 are absolutely incredible albums and way above the others.  I would rate each of them as a 5 star masterpiece.  Numbers 4-5 are excellent and 6-7 are both good albums too.  The first three have never really resonated with me for some reason

Every one of Opeths albums are awesome and unique. They all bring something to the table, so it is very hard to list them from favorite to least favorite. Lets see...

1. Still Life- it's too good, the concept, the melodies, the riffs, it has two of Opeths top five songs and is, in my opinion, the quintessential Opeth album. Flows perfectly from start to finish and every musician was at their best on this monster album.
2. Blackwater Park- usually gets hailed as the bands best work, it has a few weak songs though, and they hold it back from the top spot, but tracks like Bleak and The Drapery Falls are essential.
3. Ghost Reveries- maybe they're most even effort, this and Blackwater are interchangeable. Ghost Reveries is Opeths darkest album, and maybe heaviest as well, last one with Lopez, he plays so damn good on this album, it's almost like he knew.
4.My Arms, Your Hearse- When Opeth defined they're sound, very strong album, April Ethereal and When are my two favorites, Mikeal played bass on this one, Mendez is missed whenever I revisit this, but it's still great.
5.Morningrise- Classic, these songs stand the test of time no questions asked. More acoustic than newer albums, lots of black metal characteristics, and Akerfeldt sounds downright evil, winning formula? Yes.
6. Watershed- Balanced album, nothing sounds bad, and, using Opeth standards, nothing sounds amazing either, save Hessian Peel, Hessian Peel is flawless, Watershed is not, but it is still quite good.
7. Deliverance- Soaring highs and crashing lows that is Deliverance in a nutshell for me. It has two of my favorite Opeth tracks in Deliverance and Master's Apprentices, and two tracks I skip every single time in Wreath and By the Pain I see in Others, some it feels stale and uninspired, and some if it is classic Opeth.
8. Damnation- I am not a huge fan of Opeths lighter side, on other albums Mikaels clean vocals are welcome and serve as great texturing and a great tool to bring in beautiful melodies amongst the the most inspired and well written metal of my generation, here they are the whole package, and I find myself missing what makes Opeth truly Opeth. However, these are good songs, Damnation has it's place in the Opeth discography, and in my opinion 8th place seems appropriate. Good album, missing the most crucial part of Opeths sound.
9. Orchid- Orchid is raw, very very raw. For me listening to it is just like a little history lesson. Opeth evolved into something truly unique and amazing, this is where they came from. It doesn't get much play because it sounds so unfinished to my ears, but is still intriguing to listen too.
10. Heritage- Like I said, I prefer Opeths heavy side, because it is an integral part of who Opeth are. There is no heavy side to this album, and that is not even close to the worst thing wrong with it. As a fan of prog rock I hate to use this term but it is the truth, this album suffers greatly from progressive "noodling". Most of the time Opeth are moving from boring passages of music that feel totally improvised, which doesn't cut it for me. The lyrics are laughable most of the time with gems like "feel the pain in your brain, insane". It's really a shame that this is the path Opeth are taking for their new sound. It has some alright moments in I Fear the Dark and Folklore, but this one is truly for fans and collectors only. Or for close minded people that think anything with growls isn't music anymore ;)

Opeth is in my top 3 favorite bands of all time and I highly recommend them to everyone.

I'd lower a bit ratings for Deliverance, Damnation (8,5/10 both), My Arms... and Still Life (7/10 both) and raise Morningrise up to 9/10. Anyway, I still love all those slbums.
