Grateful dead...them tuning before a set starts, and the anticipation of the first beat, having a clue at what they are going to play, just by the notes they fiddle with while tuning...love that. AS for prog...usual stuff: Dogs - the middle synth bit w/dogs barking Cinema show - synth solo Grendel - last five mins Incantations - Last 8mins Gates of delirium - all of it -fave song. Stranger in your soul & All of the above - both last 4 mins and ..yeah, someone said 'Jacobs ladder'... the synth bit in the middle and the very end...love that song |

This is a cool topic. So what is the proper term for this phenomena of music that we all enjoy. There's got to be a better term than "spine tingle" and "hair standing". Also, I noticed, like someone else had said, certain songs can loose their magic and then if you dont listen for awhile it comes back haha. I had this happen with Close to the edge. |

Exactly. I had this happen with so many tracks... But I had to stop listening to them for about several months (like eg. the whole Foxtrot album, but I'm afraid Selling England will never regain it's magic for me - I've listened to it so many times ![]() So, IMO it is good and bad at the same time - this "hair standing", because many tracks are magic, but they can also lose it's magic. |

I can usually get back the original thrill of hearing one of these songs if I dont listen for a few weeks. Its a shame you cant experience the joy of the FoF guitar solo any more haha. |

Mellotron part behind the sax solo on KC's Cirkus The climactic "I feel lost in the city" line in Heart of the sunrise, the whole song actually. Sax part in The Moon Is Down from Aquiring the taste, The crazy f**kin part in FZ's Inca Roads from One Size Fits All The bridge in Queen's "Prophet's Song" that begins with "Flee for your life! Who heed me not, let all your treasure make you" Can's entire Tago Mago record Led Zeppelin's entire catalog (especially lV, HOTH, PG and ITTOD) Gong's Master Builder, and Oily Way FZ's feedback action on Filthy Habits "Wond'ring Again" from Living in The Past totally slays me, oh sh*t, and Witches Promise!! When "Experience" from GG's IAGH kicks in with the Bass Mellotrons in The Cinema Show Eclipse on DSOTM makes me cry every time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "TEENAGE WASTELAND!!!! IT'S ONLY TEENAGE WASTELAND!!!!!" how royal is that part! The chorus to Iron Maiden's "Flight of Icarus" ELP's Toccata The last verse of GG's "the Face" when they kind of flip the timing around, FZ's King Kong (esp. PT III ) The guitar solo in STAIRWAY!!!!!

Some great passages: Tony Banks' synth solo on "Cinema Show" Pink Floyd's "Sheep" ending The curious but effective piano solo on "Afterwards" (VDGG) The vocal interplay between Byron & Kerslake at the ending os "Paradise" (Uriah Heep) Greg Lake's acoustic passage on "Pictures at an Exhibition" And many, many more |

A lot of people have said Starless, by King Crimson, but the spot in particular that gets me every time I hear the whole song from the beginning is the coda, when the mellotron kicks in. Chilling!

I think one of the most chilling moments in KC's dicography is a short ascending guitar passage in Fallen angel , after the "solo" section, and after the first line sung by Wetton. I can't help but shiver everytime I hear it, it's incredible. Also the intro to The night watch and the final crescendo to Fracture are amazing. the "battle" section in Supper's ready, as well as the finale, the "I set a course south-east of Lyra..." section and the finale of Cygnus X-1 by Rush, the multi vocal part on I get up I get down before it bursts into the organ section, Wurm in Starship trooper - by Yes And, if I may |

I notice she hasn,t been included as a prog artist but listen to the second side of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love album a collection of themed songs -The Seventh Wave.It has all the attributes of great prog-brilliant musicianship,a concept and the odd weird noise!
