Yesterday I had a pleasure of meeting Tony Levin in the airport...

He confirmed that rehearsing for new KC is in progress but he did not tell any specific timelines... though some more or less official information refers to 2007 for new KC stuff... let's hope

Wow, that is intensely cool... ok, two questions. What airline does he fly? and does security allow his "stick" in the passenger compartment?

He was touring with his band... he had a concert in Moscow and was flying Delta to NY.

He had three sticks with him. He had to open all of his boxes - STICKS ARE LOOKING COOL, I'm telling you...

More than that, he is a very nice guy ;-)))))

BTW, he was flying ECONOMY CLASS! Does not he have enough money to travel in BUSINESS?

Do you know that the musicians make a PITTANCE from album sales???????

The lion's share of their money comes from tour revenue and merch.

Exactly. Hardly anything is made on CD sales.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

I believe most of the money from CD sales come to producers. Musicians get around 5-7% of the profit.

In Russia almost all the music is downloaded for free from internet. Hardly anyone can afford buying CDs for $12-18 - that's too much for Russia Ouch.

BTW, Deep Purple can afford having their own jet. Tony Levin should be quite well-off considering his studio work with lots and lots of other musicians... plus add KC CDs sales which should not be bad at all

I've heard he's a really nice guy. There are few players I can think of who have played with as many legends as Tony. KC, Gabriel, Bozzio/Levin/Stevens, LTE... I'm sure I'm missing a few. I mean *sheesh*! Belew gives him a run for the money in the "I've played with everyone" department. (Zappa, Bowie, NIN, Porcupine Tree).

Most of the cd sale money goes to record companies, management, etc.A band can make around 8 cents on the dollar from cd sales, and have to split that 8 cents on the dollar between all the members of the band.

All those people saying downloading music is taking money out of musicians pockets have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

Thats a greate idea but finding indie shops is near impossible, forcing us to either download or accept daylight robbery at HMV ect

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

There are at least two indie shops in Grimsby, so unless you live completely out in the sticks there should be one nearby

why the hell would i shop indie
when all of the stores you listed have all the CD's AND DVD's i wanna buy in them
and besides indie stores aren't any less expensive
and btw
it costs me a dollar for a song offline. $20 for a new CD with only 10-12 songs on it
and their merchandise is sooooo expensive
concert tickets for some bands are unbelievably high
to me...
its all a little excessive
how can this mean anything to me?
when i really dont feel a thing at all

actually not buying cds does take money out of the pocket of the artists

without cd sales, bands will not stay signed - therefore there is no music at all

buy cds you fools - i command you

It probably is because he doesn't want to put on airs. Fripp takes public transportation because he doesn’t want to get into that "Rock Star" mode that destroys a lot of artists. Maybe Levin feels the same way.

Interesting how this post changed into a discussion of the economics of MP3's.
