Topic: Incubus - The Odyssey Posted: September 28 2005 at 23:44 |
Uhhhh has anyone heard this four piece, 26 minute long composition from Incubus? Its on the Halo 2 soundtrack..kinda took me by surprise, as Incbus' latest stuff has been far more commerically infulenced..but this new song is heavily jazz-metal-prog oriented...its pretty great, actually. nothing completely groundbreaking, but worth checking out.
Also, you Brandon Boyd barely gets any words out at all...which is good, because i always thought i would enjoy the band more without him

I have not yet heard this song....
But I have been an Incubus fan for years and they are probably my favorite recent
"mainstream" band. Their first two albums "Fungus Amongus" and
"S.C.I.E.N.C.E." are actually quite experimental for their time (yes
yes, of course not prog...) but I like them. Also, I
think Brandon Boyd is the most talented singer in mainstream rock
today. the rest of the band are brilliant musicians, and they
continue to evolve their sound into something completely different
everytime they put out something new.

I dont mind incubus as much as i use to, they have grown on me, I love the song 'are you in?' its got a great funky bassline and mink enziger uses some nice harmonics in the intro/verse. But yeah my mate has both Halo games so Iv heard it, its pretty differnt from what they normally do(a change musically perhaps?) and it rocks pretty hard and kiks plenty of ass. Incubus I call you to do more like it!

Yeah, it's a brilliant piece. They play a section of it on the Live at Red Rocks DVD.

I've always considered them to be more on the artsy side of things. They've definintley had a porgoresion from album to album, and I can't wait to hear what they come up woth the ir next record (currently in studio.)
and Mike Engzinger is a wonderful and creative guitarist.

Have you heard the Odyssey yet? I actually just found it and am listening to
it. It's pretty much all instrumental and way beyond what they've done
before IMO. A HUGE step in the right direction for them (though I still
haven't heard the fifth movement yet.)

Yes I concur, The Odyssey is prog-ish. I enjoyed it personally, and that's coming from someone who has been tempted to throw away "A Crow Left of the Murder..." since it came out. I have decided to keep this album hearing this - The Odyssey of course (the best thing they've ever accomplished), and even check out their upcoming release. Whenever that is. If you haven't heard the Odyssey and are scared to because it's Incubus, shutup and download/buy it ASAP.

Thanks ProgCerebrum for bringing this to my attention, you-the-man.

Where would you be able to buy this? I haven't seen an official release like an
EP or anything. Is there one?

I quite like Ben Kenney on bass. He has a different style than
their previous bassist, a little more understated and certainly less
loud (the other guy could get a bit overly loud at times), but he gets
the job done well. If you need more convincing, check out the
version of "Drive" on the Live at Red Rocks DVD. the bass handles
most of the chords and driving melody (the way acoustic guitar does in
the studio version), while the guitarist plays around with some
synthesizer. It's a really interesting take on an overplayed
song, and showcases Kenney's talent as a bassist as well as backing
vocalist.
Also, "Deep Inside" is probably my favorite incubus song. it
combines jazz fusion, thrash metal and mr. bungle-esque changes in a
rather pleasant way.

@fragile...
if you are referring to an official release of the Odyssey, I think
it's only available as a part of the Halo 2 OST, which you can probably
buy on CD.
