Topic: Your favorite prog year Posted: November 22 2005 at 15:57 |
Out of all the years prog music has existed, what is your favorite?
Mine is 1971 because of these albums,
- The Yes album
- In the Land of Grey and Pink
- Meddle
- Islands
- Nursery Cryme
- Aqualung
- Tarkus
- In Search of Space
- Fourth
- Matching mole
- Pawn Hearts
What year are your favorite albums in or, which year has your favorite selection of albums?

1972! If only Pawn Hearts was released a year later, it would be the ultimate
year.
EDIT: except Octopus is 73. Three Friends is for 72. Good enough for me!

'72 is the '67 of prog. But I prefer '66 to '67 anyway (kinda) so I'll say '71. More young.

Maybe 1974:
Barclay James Harvest – Everyone Is Everybody Else
Camel – Mirage
Caravan – Caravan & The New Symphonia
Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
King Crimson - Red
Le Orme – Contrappunti
Premiata Forneria Marconi – L’Isola Di Niente
Rick Wakeman – Journey To The Centre Of The Earth
Yes – Tales From Topographic Oceans
Yes – Relayer
1972 and 1973 are very special too.

I'm pretty torn between 71, 72 and 73... which is bad, since they'll be
the three most common years mentioned. I'll go with 1973.

71-74 (Genesis Time period, as well, as many good albums such as Dark
Side of the Moon, Close to the Edge and other classics). Then again,
this is the "classic" time period of prog, unless you can prove me
wrong. I don't know because I haven't heard all of the albums mentioned.

Can you be a little more specific, which year and why it is that year

1972 - The year of Foxtrot, Thick as a Brick and Close to the Edge... also Dark Side was recorded this year but released the next one.
1972 is also the year I bought my first 2 prog albums: Atom Heart Mother & Meddle.

The period from 1971 to 1974 is great. I can't really choose from them, at least 6-7 essential albums every year.I

This one was released in 1978...
As far as I'm concerned, I'd go for 1975, but not because of one or more milestone albums...
It's just a matter of sonorities: I always thought htat the music released prior to this year suffers from the "dated sound syndrome".
From 1975 on instead, maybe thanks to the massive introduction of synthesizers (notably the ARP used by Pink Floyd to name one), sound became definitely more "modern"
Also the increasing neatiness in production helped reach a sonority quality that at times can hardly be distinguished from the present day one.

If I have to choose years, I'll go with both 1970 and 1978.
1970 is when they were energized on getting it all together, so the music was really sincere but not boring. And 1978 because that's about the time they began to weed-out the nonense, delivering only the best components of Progressive Music.
The years in between had to much nonsense diluting the good. Lots of silliness.
(Where "they" refers to the typical, brand-name Prog band.)
