I cannot even tell you how much I love that song. I don't know why, but I just love it even though it's considered a weak track in Nursery Cryme!
Definitely is one of my Genesis favorites, not only "Short silly Genesis favorite", generally, a big favorite.
such a stupid song though :P

I say And You and I, Close to the Edge and Suppers Ready have the best endings. (and Gates of Delerium and The Musical Box)

There are so many epic endings, it's difficult to choose favorites, but....
Suppers Ready (of course): pure emotion, gets me every time!
Starship trooper (the Yessongs version): Howe & Wakeman just building & building to that final arpeggio...
Tarkus (again, the live version): Spectacular: ELP at their finest.
Seven Stones (Genesis): The Mellotron coda is beautifully understated, but for me makes this song one of the standout tracks from Genesis's early career - love it!
So many more.... God, I love progressive rock

Most excellent choices both The ending to Chamber of 32 Doors is perfect in the sense that it really does complete the song -it's as if the best and most effective bit had been left to the end, in all its' understated evocativeness (hmm, spelling?)... Love it.
the ending of chamberof 32 doors might be the best ending of the first half of an epic of all times.A great way to leave the audience and have had the interval if the movie had been made. Then to come thundering back with Lilywhite Lilith. Genesis in their heyday certainly thought a lot about what they were doing atmospherically , emotionally , sequentially , lyrically. Pity they discovered that they would sell better with tracks like No Reply At All.

Alright, now I need to go and have a listen to The Musical Box again to see what all this fuzz is about -I must have missed something great until now
But to add another one before I do: Tempus Fugit by YES, yes, yes, yes...!

My favorit ending has to be Suppers Ready, it really is the most uplifting end to a song I've ever heard.

Hello everyone! - Just registered on the board and I figured this thread would be a neat place to start.
My vote would have to go to Rush - 2112.

From reading most of the above replies, I can gather that most of you think that only Symphonic Prog bands can have good endings to songs.
Anyone care to prove me wrong?

What do you think is the best ending of a prog song?
For me it's:
Genesis - The Musical Box. It's so dramatic, beautiful, and an outstanding
arrangement. Works so well because the ending part is so different than the
rest of the song. It's even more dramatic to WATCH LIVE. Gabriel is insane
but its just... Mind blowing... |
Excellent choice. I would either say the Musical box or Supper's Ready, I
absolutely love the "as sure as eggs" ending. The emotions are everywhere.

The end of Faaip de Oaid on lateraus it has a brief few seconds pause then you have a frantic, worried voice telling or spilling the beans on the possible Roswell cover up superb or possibly war of the wolrds where you have NASA talking to either a ship or another space station and one guy sees some green mist coming out of mars and he starts cracking up and his signal is finally lost with a worried NASA franticlly trying to recover his signal...freaky endings or what!?
