Topic: Your Favorite Bassist? Posted: February 01 2006 at 02:51 |
Im obsessed with the Bass Guitar and obviously Prog is a great genre to listen to with its large array of Brilliant Bassist. Most of the best Bass players in the world can be found in progressive rock bands.
I cant really pick just one but: Les Claypool(my hero),Chris Squire etc..
So who's your favorite Bassist? No need for a poll
Also,If you know of any eclectic interesting Basisists New or Old please let me know.

Well, it's true. Punk and some rock too destroy the reputation of the bass guitar....sadly.

Steve Harris! He has many amazing bass performances... Like To Tame a Land, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Powerslave, Phantom of the Opera, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Gengis Khan, Invaders, and The Number of the Beast. I'd say Powerslave and Killers are his best bass performance albums. But my favorite bassline from his is the wicked evil sounding bass solo Only the Good Die Young. It gives me chills. Also, he has a great bass sound and clear presence. His bass isn't burried underneath the guitars, it's in your face. And his right hand technique is godly.

Helmut Hattler of Kraan and Guru Guru is definitely worth checking out. He should be much better known, but Guru Guru and Kraan are probably too obscure. He also played in short-lived projects like Liliental, Highdelberg or Tab Two and published one solo album (Bassball, showing him swinging his bass guitar like a baseball-bat hitting a ball at you on the cover). In the 70s he won many bass polls in German music magazines, against excellent players like Squire or Pastorius. Another one that should be named: Gerald Luciano Hartwig of Karthago, Embryo, Guru Guru and the Roman Bunka Band (a German guitar and oud player who also deserves a lot more attention; he used to play with Embryo). I am pretty sure that, as usual, no-one is going to check out my recommendations though. Jannik Top of Magma. Else the usual suspects which have already been named by others (Percy Jones, Jaco Pastorius, Chris Squire...)

Fantastic, check out Gordian Knot's Emergent, it's a heck of an album.
As for my favorites, I gotta go with Victor Wooten and Stanley Clarke (too hard to choose between them).

My personal favourite one is Chris Squire, for the timbre of his bass guitar, for his speed (check out Relayer) and his ingenuosity (CTTE, Fragile and Drama are outstanding examples)
Honourable mentions: Steve Harris and Paul McCartney (listen to I want you for an example...)

Ruin's most recent bassist and a remarkable player!
Jannick Top's work with Magma is also well worth checking out.
