Fish is from Scoltland and so is Pallas, but I really don't like this band. For non-prog, check Belle and Sebastian, from Scotland. I love them. |

Paradigm Keep your eye on events at the Renfrew Ferry and the Carling Academy (both in Glasgow, both have websites). These are the venues where you are most likely to see bands which are featured on this site (with the exception of the big guys, of course). Recent gigs at these venues have included Porcupine Tree, Hatfield And The North, and Steve Hackett.

Scotland and Ireland have GREAT traditional celtic music! - Great
melodies, and an instrument that only few people can play in that
style, the fiddle. I love when it gets incorporated in prog.

STONE THE CROWS played a fantastic mixture of heavy blues and
progressive rock. "Ode To John Law" (1970) is possibly my favourite album of all time. |

No really great prog bands, lots of great Celtic ones.
Wolfstone, Runrig and Capercaillie are the best but there are many other good ones. |

Must give a hand to Stone The Crows; as Politician says, they were a mix of blues rock and prog rock; if ever the genre 'progressive blues' makes it here, they'd be amongst the first bands I'd encourage to be added. Beggar's Opera made one great album for me- 'Waters Of Change'- but the others don't really approach that to these ears...

On one of my visits to Scotland (Edinburgh hogmony street party) I wandered around some of those chessy tourist shops with lots of kilts, Haggis, Bagpipes, etc in. Well whilst in there, they were playing some interesting sounding what I suppose you would call Celtic-Fusion.
My best description would be progressive/fusion with Bagpipes, Flute, Tin-whistle, melodeon, Fiddle, etc. Anyway I had a look at the CD's thought, mmm, I'll get one of these before I leave, then after all the festivities were over promptly forgot ![]() BTW, one of these 'types' of bands actually played live on one of the street stages the night prior to new years eve. Anyone know the sort of music I am talking about? Any bands people know of? Did I get so drunk that new years eve that the whole thing is a dream? ![]() |

I am just getting into Pallas. The Cross and the Crucible is excellent if you like melodic symph prog. I think Scottish prog is linked to the sounds of the bagpipes because a lot of what I have heard, including Fish, has long sweeping notes and not too many twiddly bits. I like it.!!

Maybe I missed something here ...
No mention of Jethro Tull? Ian Anderson? Tull is prog, and he's Scottish ... |

not quite progressive rock, but maybe progressive
folk.....Stealers Wheel was an exceptional band and billed as the Scottish C,S& N. If you like them you'll find a best of Stealers Wheel quite a discovery. Stuck in the Middle is not the only good song they ever made......classic band! ![]() |
