I would go for The Experience although numerically a trio - technically they could never be termed one - it was Jimi and 2 backing musicians and with respect to the various members who covered his rhythm section - it could have been anyone. The term trio imo should infer equal input from all members.

My prog choice although as much psych as prog would be the wonderful Kingston Wall - one of the best guitarists matched with a very talented and musical rhythm section.
