This is an excelent post that makes me think about the musical background of the average member of this site. The groups/individuals that started it all are in large parts despised, avoided or put in that eternal "wish list" that never fulfills itself. Makes me think about how little weight we have to put on the 5 stars-reviews, mainly that of the bands from the 90's onwards.
These are the groups of the Top 100 list that I had some kind of contact and never had touched me. Differently of some of you, I do have a lot of very rare albums (downloaded until I can afford a regular copy). Thanks the internet we can listen to virtually all contemporary albums before decided to buy it or not (please don't reply with defences of the private property, how downloading is killing music bla bla bla). So here is my "hate" list:
Marillion (too weak for my ears)
DT and co-genres - I like heavy metal, but never was touched by any band of this so-called "prog"metal. Sounds to me so artificial constructed, neither heavy (their heavier moments are so girlie and childish...) nor elaborated with emotions; just weird times signatures popping here and there without purpose, talking about pseudo-depressive motifs, D&D mithology with low guitar chords. I don't care for the lyrics, as supid as they can be sometimes, but the music is very bland and generical.
Porcupine Tree - this kind of space trip in the XXI century sounds too dated. bands that try desperately to sound innovative and/or "fresh" with exciting ideas never made before are very arrogant and derivative to my nerves.
Supertramp and APP - just own a sort of best of. Too poppish - in the bad sense of the term. pop for pop, I put my efforts in things like Styx and Boston and feel more rewarded by them.
TMV - probably the greatest deception I have with this site and the reason why I emule music before buying more than ever. Frances the Mute is just ridiculous. Even Bjork in her most "artistic" moments is "better" than them, because she doesn't try to recreate the wheel.
IQ - I don't know why, but after my Marillion-rejection all the neo genre can be avoided without surprises, right?
There's a lot of surprises in my journey with the "giants", considering the useful and provisory definition of this term in this post: bad ones, wonderful and so-sos. Probably Gentle Giant was my big deception. However, this feeling doesn't imply that, one day or another, i won't listen to the albums I own. But the same conclusion can't be extended to the guys above. Sorry.

Far too many to mention - missing entire genres of krautrock, RIO, canterbury, for example. VdGG, Camel, Anglagard are some bands for whom I have nothing. Nothing particular against these bands/genres, and for me it's not so much a funding problem as it is a time problem - I'm too busy these days to devote huge chunks of time to checking out the myriad of bands discussed on this site. I'd say my prog collection is pretty "n00b-esque" compared to a lot of the other members.

Commonly Shine on Brightly and A Salty Dog are considered their best.
But if you like something harder, try Home or Broken Barricades

Yeah, I'm pretty much without any Neo Prog at all. I find it completely uninspired and of course unoriginal. and youre a fool for not at least trying EitS.

Hey micky, things are well - the baby is doing great, but no question it's hard work!
Now that I'm back to work full time I can sneak in some posts here and there...
Hope everything is good with yourself, Becks, and the kids!
