Here's a question for all you musicians out there (non musicians are welcome to post too though).
¿Which would you consider to be the most dificult band to play a cover from? or in other words ¿what band makes the most technically complex music for you to play? BTW, I'm only talking about classic prog bands so Dream Theater (or any other prog metal band) is not allowed. Anyway I'll appreciate any comments you have. |

I think Dream Theater would be very difficult to cover.

Gentle Giant, I suppose. I can't imagine how anyone could do a Gentle Giant cover without it sounding like a copy of the original.

Well I guess Banco or PFM because you'd have to learn Italian. I believe that out of "classic" prog bands, Zappa would be the hardest band to cover. Now with complete disregard to the "no prog metal" part of the thread, I would just like to add that my band tried covering Meshuggah's "New Millenium Cyanide Christ" and "Rational Gaze" and it was a disaster. Not that I don't believe we're capable, it's just that those time signatures and polyrhythms are so hard to pull off with the entire band on the same page. |

Surely it has to be a Zeuhl band such as Koenji Hyakkei or Magma.

I covered King Crimson and some Yes with the band I used to play with. As far as Kc is concerned, I would say most of the things from the "classic" period (pre-Discipline) are not terribly hard to pull off; we actually went for the more difficult stuff and it came out pretty well even live. But I can hardly imagine trying to cover Mahavishnu - that would be an immense challenge and the mst difficult on your list. Of course it depends on the players' abilities and background, but then there are also things that are so personal to the ones who played them first that it's impossible to make them your own, even when they do have a precise pre-thought structure.

I´d say Mahavishnu. Sure Gentle Giant is very complex, but it can be done... Mahavishnu on the other hand... just a few hundred people in the planet can match that, and to get them all together in one band! Good luck!

From this list:
1. King Crimson
2. Yes
But I think bands like Magma, Yezda Urfa and Anglagard are quiet a challenge to make a cover, eventually more than KC or Yes...

Mahavishnu and Gentle Giant are two very compelling choices because of
the technicality, but I chose VDGG. I don't know if you can find a
voice to cover Hammill.

Hey thanks a lot to all for your thoughts on this. I can't believe I'm the only one who voted for ELP, I mean Emerson's keyboard work alone requires insane skill, not to mention Palmer's out-of-this-world drumming. I guess Lake's bass lines can be handled ok but his voice would be a though one to match.
