Topic: New to Dream Theater Posted: September 29 2007 at 17:53 |
II just started listening to Dream Theater, and have mixed feelings. I like their prog stuff alot, but I dont like the heavy metal part. I've downloaded some stuff from Falling into Infinity, and Images And Words, and really like the stuff from those albums. Do they have anything similar? I've tried Octavarium, and its ok.

^ you should dwell some time on Images and Words ... it's one of their best albums. I prefer Awake by a narrow margin, but it's also a bit heavier. If you want to know more about the other albums - there are tons of reviews!

my personal favourite album are scenes from a memory and six degrees of inner turbulence, metropolis is one of their most proggy albums
if you dont like their heavier stuff stear clear of train of thought, despite the fact i actually quite love that album

maybe I'm old school.... or just went into aural shutdown during my
stay in Raff's 'House of DT horrors' where I was .... exposed to all the DT albums in their full glory. But I don't recall 'heavy metal' IN Dream Theater.

Apart from the ones you've mentioned I'd go for Scenes from a Memory next. You might also enjoy A Change of Seasons.
If you don't like the heavy stuff I'd avoid their latest, Systematic Chaos and especially Train of Thought.

When Day and Dream Unite is different, but still fantastic. I've been listening to it more and more. It is heavy, but not in the same way thanks to the mix. It's definately some of they're proggiest stuff though.

If you're going to investigate any further in DT, there's no way you can avoid the metal thing. Anyway, their melodically richest albums are "Images and Words" and "Scenes from a Memory", so perhaps you can concentrate on these two for a while and let them grow on you in time, if they ever. Also, the "A Change of Seasons" suite from the equally titled EP can complement your current investigation on DT's most progressive side. In many ways, this suite recaptured the essence of "I&W", which is explained by the fact that its main body had originally been composed for that 1992's album.
Kind regards.

Get Images and Words, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Scenes from a Memory, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (the second disk is worth the heaviness of the first) for the best and least metal Dream Theater music.

Awake is my favorite, and while it's one of their darker and heavier efforts it's very melodic and dynamic at the same time.
Images and Words and Falling Into Infinity are great tries as well, though the latter is one of their most commercial albums (but it's better than Octavarium, in my opinion). I&W, however, is a Prog-Metal classic!

In my opinion, Images and Words is the only one worth having. There is some good stuff scattered throughout the other albums too, but the only really consistent album is I&W.

I think most of DT's albums are varied. "Octavarium" is by far the least heavy, so you should be prepared for more heaviness on many of the other albums. Personally, I tend to prefer their heavier tracks, while I actually dislike a couple of the more ballady ones, but that's just me.

Their best albm is MDK by far, but KA is excellent and I'm really enjoying their debut lately, "KOBAIA".

Ah yes, their 'background music' - phase.
But I'll recommend Images and Words instead of these albums. Quite a pleasant album.
