I'm confused with this thread anyway. You got to be pretty much rated to be overrated. Now the most rated here are : Genesys, Pink floyd, Yes, King crimson, DT, Rush, Jethro Tull, Camel, VDGG, Gentle giant, Marilion, ELP & Porcupine tree. It got to be one of those.

Well, I do'nt know DT very well so I wo'nt say a word of them. From the rest - maybe Marilion ?

I'd rather speak of who is missing in that list (and ofcourse I do'nt know them all) like Renaissance, Moody blues, Kansas, Robert Wyatt.

If that's the list to choose from for the most overrated prog band, then it has to be PT IMHO; I just don't understand what the fuss is about... and Lord knows, I've tried!!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I'd rather list Robert Wyatt among "most underrated".

I'm pleased i'm not the only one cos I'm gonna say King Crimson as well. They've been riding on the back of their last decent album 'Red'  for over thirty years. They certainly don't deserve to be called prog legends, well, at least not Mr Robert  'Boring' Fripp. This guy is so far up his own arse.....

And what have Yes, ELP, Genesis, etc. been doing? They may not have copied their classic albums all the time but they certainly made some pretty crappy music...

You don't know...???

Nope, I don't. I've bought the albums, listened to them endlessly, trying all
the while to absorb and comprehend the body of work. But alas, it all
escapes me. I keep saying to myself, "Bruford left Yes for this??"

It's like they say: Different strokes for different folks. I guess my stroke
regarding KC is way out in left field.
like one user said: Fu*k your prog conventions.  Almost everything that KC relased after '72 is miles ahead of anything Yes ever recorded (ok, Fragile comes close thou)

Brand X, Dream Theater, Spock's Beard all getting slammed!? what for exactly?

Bands like Marillion are so much more overrated especially when I constantly read about people saying the technical proficiency/prowess/originality whatever is a mandatroy feature of prog.  There's a lot of  neo-prog that just doesn't feature that and not only are a lot of songs basic rock with nothing particularly unique they still get hailed as being incredible....sorry I smell a big fat contradiction in terms.   Don't get me wrong, this is not a MUST requirement for me personally but the point is that band's such as Brand X, Dream Theater...will often get highly regarded due to their abilities which most certainly are obvious and present whether you like them or not.

Oh and by the way Kansas may not be the most technical band to ever exist but they don't exactly get overrated do they anyway!

Change the record someone and get some of those more positive topics rolling

sorry i just never detected an ounce of emotion in Brand X

ProgSac - sounds great

Now the count of known prog fans in Sacramento is up to 3 (gettin' up there)!

Anyway,

allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Tom MacMillan, I'm a high school student, and will soon be starting an eZine which brings the worlds of modern rock, prog, and jazz together. Or, at least, will attempt to.

With help of advertisers, a few labels, and some great musicians, BSM will be launched in early July.

Most overrated? Any band from Sweden. I've never heard a single band from Sweden I like - they're all so dark and gloomy and with cellos and that nonsense.

They have such beautiful women - why don't they just spend all their time in the sack, and forget about making music, because they suck.

Sweden has Änglagård , TFK , Kaipa , Anekdoten, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Samla Mammas Manna, Bo Hansson and Isildurs Bane to name a few.

Why don't you continue : name 5 good American prog bands. It's not going to be easy, eh?

Yes, Rush is a wimpy version of Dream Theater because 1974 is definitely a later year than 1989. Dream Theater came out AFTER Rush, and Rush is definitely not wimpy. For being a 3-piece band that has had the same line-up since their first American Tour, creating albums that sound like they were made from 5-piece groups, that is most certainly not being wimpy.

I think a lot of the newer Prog bands that try to emulate the sound that inspired them are a bit overrated sometimes, but it's hard to pick any specific band or group because if we could all agree on one single band, chances are, that band wouldn't have made more than 2 records.

You'd be amazed what one can do with a cello. I have seen Frank Wolff of the "Frankfurter Kur Orchester" (which I think is prog!) go mad on stage with his cello, running around while playing, imitating Jimi Hendrix, playing the Cello behind his back. Absolutely amazing.
