This week, Nine Inch Nails released an all-instrumental experimentation album titled "Ghosts I-IV". It was released with a similar format to Radiohead's "In Rainbows": The first 9 tracks are downloadable for free (in fact Trent Reznor uploaded the songs to Piratebay personally), and the rest of the 36 track album is downloadable in various formats, completely DRM-free, for $5.
The $5 download comes with lots of extras, such as a .pdf of liner notes, and a bunch of jpegs of desktop backgrounds, avatars and other images.
Another interesting fact is that the music is not licensed under copyright, but rather under a creative commons license, meaning the tracks are free to be used in any way you see fit, and remixing and creativity are encouraged.
Reading through the liner notes, I discovered a familiar name contributing to several tracks: Adrian Belew of King Crimson fame! He adds guitars and other instruments to a handful of tracks on the album.
It's definitely a cool record... it's all instrumental and runs the gamut of NIN's sounds, and in fact reminds me a lot of some of the more creative tracks from "the Fragile".

great album, and also if you can find them anywhere else I'm *pretty* sure that you can get the whole album without any legal trouble

Yeah, since the whole thing is Creative Commons licensed and intentionally DRM-free, it is free to copy and share legally.
I should elaborate, though. Technically, if you download all 36 tracks, you *should* pay the $5, though they have no way of requiring you to. The CC license makes the music "free as in free speech, not as in free beer", as Linus Torvalds would say. Edited by GoldenSpiral - March 06 2008 at 16:05 |

I paid for the 2CD set and finally listened to all 36 tracks today. Great stuff! I had previously listened to only the first 9 tracks (downloaded torrent) because of the site/server problems on Monday. I liked it but the more ambient tracks seemed very basic to me. I like the harder tracks a lot more though. Anyway today I listened to the rest, and for the most part it's great!

The 2CD set is $10 + $13.49 shipping to the UK - making it £12 at current exchange rates... still a good price.

It was Adrian Belew doing a cameo on the Downward Spiral that got me interested in NIN in the first place (also my girlfriend at the time was into them), will certainly have to go for the CD. Thanks for the tip.

I ordered the CD with the downloads, unfortunately I selected the FLAC format and you only get one shot at the download only to find I had no programs that do FLAC. After trying out some crappy tryware programs, I finally found a freeware program that converted the FLAC to WAV, which I then made a CD out of that I could rip for use on my computer and digital music player. Whew!
By the way, for those of you familiar with NIN but didn't like them, give the 9 freebies available on the website a try. This album reminds me some of Eno's Music for Films albums. It's a set of all short improvisations that show Mr. Reznor to be more than a potty-mouthed maker of loud music. Of course if you're already a fan of NIN and have heard the discography, you already know Trent has more range than just loudness and cursing in his music. I think he did a wiser approach to this release than Radiohead did. You can pay for download only, download with a CD to follow, or just sample some for free. I ended up paying more for the Radiohead download than I probably should have, considering I was going to go and buy a hard copy anyway, because I wanted to show support for band. Winamp should play FLAC files. If not you can download the codec for free. |

Thanks. I've heard of Winamp and may have tried it briefly once. Not really relevant for me at this point. The CD should get here in April and I've got it in formats I can now use to listen to it.

Download the "DBpoweramp". The previous version is freeware, and you can use the codecs to transform those flac into mp3 or whatever you want. Or you can http://www.mymusictools.com/download/flac-to-mp3/

OK then, Google officially sucks because I didn't find either Winamp or DBpoweramp at the top when I searched.

It's very interesting so far. I've only heard about 12 twelves, but it's the most I've ever liked anything from NIN.
