The first 2 Kansas albums are good symphonic prog efforts. After that they started the path towards AOR not to mention the worst Prog track I've ever heard 'Magnum Opus'.I'm very much looking forward to seeing them at the Shepherds Bush Empire next Sunday

I sent you that link WON. Lets talk about it for a minute. Do you think a lean mean hit making machine looks like they did? Do you really believe that is what they were trying to accomplish? That piece was recorded at the end of year straight touring as second and third slots on the tickets. They had no money. That song is a beautiful example of symph prog. It is called the Pinnacle and it resides on their third album Masque. The sound quality is poor because it was recorded for a TV show in 1975
It starts out with a nice play of Violin and piano on one side of the stage and Organ and Guitar on the other. There are two great organ solos, violin and guitar solos in the song, not to mention a great two part harmony with a completely different verse and bridge section. I can see you say you don't like it but those guys can play and it is most definitely prog.
Just my opinion and you and I agree on PFM

Hi Garion,
Yes as I posted above, I'm looking into Kansas again, but I just dont really like their style, its just a bit too obvious for me, and a little too polished. They dont take enough risks for me, which is what I meant by 'banal'. Perhaps Leftoverture is not the best album to base my opinion on, but unfortunately its all I have access to at the moment. If you can recommend some others, I'd be happy to try them out.

How on earth did you get 'Collaborator' status?
This site has gone right downhill!!
Just to 'clone' Cygnus, 'Awaken' was released 4 YEARS after 'Firth of Fifth', and even then they dont sound alike. They both start with a piano, but then, so did Candle In The Wind. Gabriel sounds nothing like Anderson, Wakeman nothing like Banks, Howe absolutely nothing like Hackett, and even Al White and Phil are totally distinctive...
Any other forums about??

I see by your avatar that you are a Dream Theater fan. You should check what Mike Portnoy says about Pain Of Salvation and Daniel Gildenlow in particular. Something about him being a genius, if I remember correctly.

They did. As did Dream Theater, if I'm not mistaken.

Comparing these horrible bands to dream theater is such a bad comparisment as any. These prog bands fails to bring anything new to the genre and why POS TFK and SB are called geniuses i can not get my self to understand. And what mike portnoy says i dont care for he is such a uninspiring and boring drummer.

Whats with most Neo-Prog?It all sounds like watered down Genesis and all the vocalist think they are Peter G.I agree Spocks Beard dosnt always sound progressive but they are always a good band.Too bad Neal Morse has gone Jesus freak wacky.I still say his voice sounds like Don Henley.

Starcastle is way overrated - they're more a Styx clone than a Yes clone. For a good Yes clone, I prefer Druid or Realm or even Flash.
|
Since Starcastle came out in 1976 and Styx floundered until The Grand illusion in 1977 that makes no sense.

DreamTheatre without a doubt. I dont see what everyone sees in them.
As for actual good bands who are overated, id probably go for PinkFloyd.

Fans of the neo-prog movement tend to protect the reputations of their faves...especially the Dream Theater crowd. I don't even consider most of the stuff prog, though I don't really mind the stuff (usually). I think that Marillion is TERRIBLY overrated, as are Dream Theater. They've come to Seoul, Korea three out of the past five years....went to two of the shows and didn't have a bad time, but I was usually ready for the exit after the first set or two.
As for the "classical" prog period, I'd say ELP are WAY overrated. Most of the stuff gives the "prog" scene a bad name (oooooh, harsh!).
I also think the US prog troupes are borderline cringe-worthy, shyte like Styx, Kansas, early Journey, Starcastle, and the Canadian trio Rush....high school parking lot burn out music (I should know, I was there!).
