Missed this thread first time round. I have mostly everything by Eloy. My favourites are:
Time To Turn
Planets
Dawn
Silent Cries and Might Echoes
The bass playing on Time To Turn is superb.Masterclass.That allied with the synths and tight drumming does the business for me.

Wow - this is a bit of a tough one! I love Eloy. It's quite strange but whilst at University I was playing Eloy (mid 80s) and no-one I knew at the time were into them, a few ridiculed them (particularly Frank's accent), and most just ignored them. Strangely enough, I started with a tape cassette version of Performance, as I was fortunate enough to hear 'A Broken Frame' being played on The Friday Rock Show, and felt the need to investigate (as you do)! I invested more of my student grant in...Inside, Planets and Metromania, remaining ignorant of the rest of Eloy's catalogue for some time. Things change, but at time of writing, I think my favourite Eloy album is currently 'Planets', but then I have a very great respect and affinity for a number of others, in particular Inside (ok it's raw but the organ and bass are outstanding), Dawn, Ocean, Power / Passion, Floating (especially Light From Deep Darkness) &Time To Turn. And that's before we get to the Live album! A 'lesser known' band maybe, but sometimes I think it's great when you love a band that's underrated!

Since I've barely scraped the surface of Eloy's discography I'm really curious about what you 'experts' have to say.
I'm really, really fond of Dawn and it's vibrant, rich and balanced combination of symphonic and spacey qualities, Planets stingier flavour and to a lesser extent the pounding waves of keys that is Ocean.
So where should I head next?

Check out Colours, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes or Power & the Passion.
Most people on Prog Archives feel as though Time To Turn and Planets should have been a double album. Which I can understand. But I find myself listening to Colours first. And then Planets. To these wacked out ears, they make a great 1-2 combo.

I'm a quite big fan since 10 years or something, though I'm not that fond of their debut and 1980+ (some 80's are fantastic though so don't get me wrong).
Masterpieces is hard to say, I've got some personal faves but masterpieces I don't know.
My favs are in this order.
1. Inside
2. Floating
3. Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes
4. Dawn
5. Power and the Passion
6. Ocean

Another great work is Chronicles I, which features some of the best songs from the 1977-1982 period, rerecorded very well. I also don't want to discredit two good albums from the 90s, "Tides Return Forever" and "Ocean 2", but I would wait and get some of the earlier classics first.

"Inside", for sure ... I don't like these cheesy keyboards that were later to be found in the arrangements, i.e. on "Silent Cries", "Ocean", "Power & Passion" etc. "Inside" is still really cool, "Land of No Body" is outstanding, the title track dto - "Up And Down" is ok, and "Future City" probably a nice bit more than ok - nice jamming. But I can't stand "Power and the Passion" - and "Silent Cries" and "Ocean" are o.k., but get on my nerves. Just "Poseidon's Creation" and "Master of Sensation" are quite good.

as a big eloy fan for ages,(i even have personally signed photos from the band which i cherich immensely) i find it hard to choose a favorite, though inside and dawn were the first albums i listened to and introduced me to prog from early age, and i never looked back since..
however my least favorite eloy album/s..(or rather the album i though at the time was not as good as their classics, was performance and to a lesser degree metromania..)though after few listens and some time later, i came to appreciate these two albums and discovered some great songs (broken frame/follow the light/nightriders/surrender..)
ra which has been slammed by many esp for use of drum machine!!(imagine the band that had two of the best drummers in rock, rosenthal and randow use a drum machine!), this album i liked very much from the first listen..with songs like heroes/voyager of future race/sensations/) eloy i thought were back in business! (if you can forget rainbow their most commercial song ever and to this day the one i always skip)
i have all their albums..including rarities(with the gem that is let the sun shine in our brain) and timeless passages, but the last one i bought was their first (the legendary 'bin' self titled album)..i hesitated much before buying it because i read so much how different it is from all their other albums..a politically driven rock album and not prog..and was not disappointed at all..although not symphonic/spacey, it has some of the best bornemann guitar, and killer songs like song of a paranoid soldier and eloy with a mind blowing intro and precussions..
let's just hope that the rumours are true and that frank is really making a new album..it's about time!

I only have four (so far).
1. Ocean
2. Live
3. Silent Cries
4. Planets
More needed, very quickly. I think Eloy are great. The decision is, what album next?
Incidentally, I second what mobby said above. I just love listening to Jurgen Rosenthal, one of my favourite drummers.
