    Posted: May 26 2009 at 00:43

I've collected some album names that appear in lyrics but not in song titles. I'm hoping to bring up some discussion on this phenomenon. Note that the following albums are mostly not prog, and you are encouraged to use prog examples.

In the form of singing:
Turn on the Bright Lights
A Love Supreme

Rainbow - Rising
Doolittle
The Mantle
Daydream Nation
Stop Making Sense
The Dark Side of the Moon

In the form of rapping or spoken words:
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Late Registration

almost:
Endtroducing.....   "introducing" appears in the lyrics
Soulja Boy Tell'em.com   the "dot com" part doesn't appear in the lyrics

First one that comes to my head is Images & Words, from the song "Wait for Sleep".

In Sorte Diaboli - Dimmu Borgir
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd (Brain Damage)
Death Magnetic - Metallica
Dark Passion Play - Nightwish (The Poet and the Pendulum)
Broken - Nine Inch Nails (Happiness in Slavery)

The Dimmu Borgir one and the Metallica ones I can't really remember the track names.

...another case like this being The Mother of Invention song Absolutely Free is on the album We're Only In It For The Money, not the album entitled Absolutely Free.

Exactly the one I was thinking of. And the album title appears in Dancing with the moonlit Knight.

Another example is Katy Lied by Steely Dan where the album title is mentioned in Dr. Wu.

Next I can think of is Tardigrade by Simon Says where the title appears in Suddenly the Rain

Also Across the Water by Jadis and A Story two days Wide by Iluvatar are examples but I will have to look it up in which song they appeared.

Interesting topic this because I always thought it was an intriguing question why an album title was created and the title itself was not a title of one of the songs but still appeared in the lyrics of one of the songs.

Marillion

Misplaced Childhood
Clutching At Straws (Nearly two song names, not directly though)

That's all I can think of.

In "White Mountain" Gabe sings: "Oucast in trespass where no..." etc.
What you cannot speak of, you have to pass on in silence.

Too tired to think this through, but Relayer appears in Tales from Topographic Oceans, but not in Relayer itself.  Sleepy
