This has been done before, but I think it's fun to revisit (I've bought alot of music, so my answers have changed)
What are your 5 favorite albums you've discovered since finding PA? Preferably albums you didn't even know existed before coming here.

If I think about albums I probably wouldn't have discovered without PA:
Curved Air - Second Album
Trees - On the Shore
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Babe Ruth - First Base
Stackridge - Pinafore Days

Most of the great classic Symphonic Prog (Yes, Genesis and others) and modern Symphonic Prog (Anglagard, After Crying, etc.). Most Fusion (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X), Post Rock (all of it), Experimental/Technical Prog Metal (Opeth, Negura Bunget, Parallaxe, Spastik Ink, Blotted Science, Maudlin of The Well), Zeuhl (Magma!) and man other greats such as Van der Graaf Generator, Mars Volta, etc. Actually I've found prog with PA!

1. Marillion
(Wouldn'tve fallen in LOVE with them if not for the Music streaming here on PA)
2. Maudlin Of The Well
(Wouldn'tve ever downloaded Part The Second or fallen in love with it if not for a post on here...)
3. A greater appreciation for Prog in general
4. A community of incredibly intelligent and non-abusive forum-posting people, who express and debate opinions in an incredibly civil and diplomatic manner.
5. A greater understanding for what makes Prog rock progressive, and why it should be appreciated and enjoyed.

At my advanced age I wouldn't have checked out so much modern/current stuff without PA. Usually if there's a buzz about something on the forums it's for a good reason, I've found.
My 18-y-o son keeps me up to date with most things metal, so I'll thank you good folks at PA for:
1. Mastodon - Crack the Skye (my son doesn't like them so I'd never have heard it otherwise; ironically I loaned it him and he loved it so much he's re-evaluating the previous stuff, as am I)
2. Pendragon - Pure (I wasn't a fan of the earlier stuff and wouldn't have checked it out without PA)
3. Karmakanik - Who's the Boss in the Garage (pure PA discovery)
4. The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love (magnificent album worth every word of praise here on PA IMO)
5. Khan - Space Shanty (I had it but lost it years ago and in the Febus thread I was given the sound advice to repurchase it - and boy am I glad I did 'cos it sounds better than it ever did).
In return I'm pleased to have persuaded a few folks to check out Fusion Orchestra and Horslips  |

Magma - Anything I can get my hands on. Seriously, I absolutely LOVE anything I've heard so far from Christian and crew. Caravan - ITLOTG&P and IICDIAOAIDIAOU and likely any other albums I get from them, as well as the Canterbury genre overall. Gentle Giant - Power and the Glory, Three Friends and Free Hand - They're so good it's not funny. Samla Mammas Manna - Maltid and Klossa Knapitatet - So good it IS funny Soft Machine - Third as it introduced me to the Softs.

With PA help, I've discovered Neu!, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Capability Brown, Eloy, Khan, Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine, Strawbs, Tangerine Dream and Gong (I've probably forgotten a few as well).

Area, for that Luglio, Agosto, Settembre (Nero) track from their fantastic debut on their PA page from:
Arbeit Macht Frei (which again is responsible for my discovery of my current Area fave: Caution Radiation Area)
And Peter Hammill solo. When I downloaded the great selection of mp3's that used to be here, including the masterpiece A Louse is Not a Home I ran out and bought the:
Silent Corner and the Empty Stage LP
I must have discovered Kayo Dot and everything related to Toby Driver because of this place. But my first was:

And curiously enough: Don Cherry:

Both reccomended in the nonprog section.

Well there would be a multiple Flower Kings entry , that's for sure. Seriously, the unbelievably great music that I could have gone through life without discovering had it not been for PA is frightening. PA, many many thanks.
So I'll narrow it to the top 5 bands I've found thanks to PA instead.
1. The Flower Kings
2. Glass Hammer
3. Transatlantic / Karmakanic
4. Boards Of Canada
5. Frost*
Twelve months ago I'd never heard of the above 5, now they're in my top bands. Thanks PA  . |

A harder question for me would be "what are your top discoveries without PA?"
I discover bands for the forums a lot, but also from the PA TOP ALBUM lists.
So, with that said...
My favorite discovered albums on PA albums are...
Unfold The Future- The Flower Kings
In The Court of The Crimson King- King Crimson
The Perfect Element pt. 1- Pain of Salvation
Still Life- Opeth
Mei- Echolyn
Dark Matter- IQ
Now in terms of bands, the list is even more endless than the albums
Opeth, Pain of Salvation, IQ, Marillion, Pendragon, Echolyn, The Flower Kings, King Crimson, Van der graaf Generator, The Decemberists and countless others. My music collection must have doubled since PA.
To think that in less than a year I discovered this much is proof PA is the #1 prog resource in the world.

I couldn't agree with this statement more. I'm a member on many forums, and there's almost always a couple of jerks who seem to post ALL the time and ruin the experience for everyone. Honestly, I can't think of anyone on PA like that. THIS is the way all forums should be run.
