Topic: Top Album 2009( so far) Posted: June 25 2009 at 00:56 |
What is your favorite album that has been released this year. I know theres still plenty of time left in the year, but what is your favorite so far?
My pick would be Crack the Skye by Mastodon. Love the songs, love the concept. The whole bands playing just gets better and vocal harmonies = huge improvement.

Agree with Crack the Skye. So far my top 5 could look like this:
1. Mastodon - Crack the Skye 2. The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love 3. The Mars Volta - Octahedron 4. John Frusciante - The Empyrean 5. Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings
I'm expecting big things from the upcoming Mew album...

I've got to say Maudlin of the Well because it's the only 2009 album I've got Still trying to fill out my prog back catalogue... Hopefully I'll get a few ideas from this thread though

^^Love that cover I sampled it from Spotify but wasn't overwhelmed with awe. It was nice anyway, perhaps I should try again some day.

Devin Townsend's Ki has been my favorite album so far in 2009. I've purchased quite a few albums released between 2003 and 2008 this year so I haven't been paying all that much attention to the newest albums.

1. Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second
2. Devin Townsend - Ki
3. Umphrey's McGee - Mantis
4. Mastodon - Part the Skye
5. Decemberists - Hazards of Love
6. Ohmphrey
Good year, I rated all 4 stars except MotW with 5. The order of 2-6 is pretty arbitrary, they're all pretty close.
I've also heard most of American Soldier, OSI, didn't bother to buy them. Gazpacho also just not my style.
Wobbler and Morglbl are ones I'd still consider getting.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

The Devil You Know - Heaven & Hell

Just got the new Mars Volta and Dream Theater and haven't made up my mind about them yet having only played them once. Expecting great things from Riverside and Beardfish.

It's definitely Merriweather Post Pavilion
But if we're looking at prog only, I'm saying Pure Reason Revolution's Amor Vincit Omnia, followed closely by Wavering Radiant and Crack the Skye
Let's see...here's my overall list so far:
1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
2. Pure Reason Revolution - Amor Vincit Omnia
3. Isis - Wavering Radiant
4. Mastodon - Crack the Skye
5. dredg - The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion
6. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
7. The Mars Volta - Octavarium
8. Propagandhi - Supporting Caste
9. Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
10. Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
11. The Field - Yesterday and Today
12. maudlin of the Well - Part the Second
13. Cursive - Mama I'm Swollen
14. Zombi - Spirit Animal
I've still yet to hear The Dear Hunter, Tortoise and Minsk, and of course this list is subject to change at any point.
