Weird how people see it differently. I've noticed that it's really splitting Muse fans down the line though. My favorite album before this new one was Black Holes, but I still thought they had plenty of room to improve on their sound. This album was exactly a step in the right direction, in my opinion. I just heard the album for the first time yesterday and I'm on my 6th listen. ![]() |

It's probably their most progressive, but I thought it was pretty bad. Their knack for great melodies is missing almost entirely. I just hear a completely overblown sound mass. I'm going to let it rest and listen again next week but I was so unimpressed with it that I couldn't get passed the first movement of that "symphony." I don't know how I made it that far, really.

The recent interview with a Finnish rock mag Soundi delved into this Muse & Prog question. Basically they know nothing about prog (they were asked about Selling England, two of them didn't know the album except one of them by name, the third had bought it for his mom as a gift) and don't view themselves as a prog band, but "if prog means bands who test their limits and try new stuff, then why not. If that's how it is, then I'm happy to be in a prog band" and "while making music we aim for maximum content and depth. I like to think there's lots of everything in our music and that you can't figure it all out on one listen. You can listen to our records like records were listened to in the 70s".

Their new album is EASILY their best and most progressive.
I was absolutely blown away! Never was the world's biggest Muse fan, but they're way up on my levels of appreciation now. ![]() |

What matters with Muse is how they manage to combine many music genres into one. Good thing they can't be classified in only one category IMO.
Still, I hope they stop doing starlighted tracks and continue to expand their progressive vein...pretty much what everyone on this site hopes for. ![]() |

Saw them perform in their home town last night where they played a couple of tracks off the new album. Seems to me like their style is continuing to evolve but they are not yet full blown prog. Not that it matters overly as they were in damn fine form and did a fantastic set.

I can only think they would be moved if the majority of the albums were released were progressive.Giving a clear sign of there musical tendencies.Maybe in ten years time, huh?

I only have Origin of Symmetry, and I do agree that it has more prog moments than I expected based on the singles I've heard from them. The prominence of the keyboards and the arpeggios and ostinatos, a couple of odd times in a couple tracks, Bellamy's incredible range...
Of course, I still think prog-related is a good fit for them. That's just me.

Cross over would be a good one. There's so many great examples on Origin of symmetry but every time I feel I Should mention it they release pop singles.Anyhow one of the best bands I've seen live. |

Of course they were - I was just saying that it's time for them to become a full-blown prog band. ![]() |

I always considered them a slightly poppier 'Space-Rock', or at least Xover. ![]() |

PA is the one of the only places that don't consider Muse progressive (check out last.fm & kerrang etc) But I agree with the PA guys with prog related. But I sure hope they will venture into it soon.

I'm confused . . . have they not always been Prog, at least a little? |

I have been following Muse with some interest from their early days. I believe that each release is a vast improvement on the prior releases. This new one sounds very interesting and I look forward to its general release. Could this be their progiest effort yet? Fingers crossed

Coheed and Cambria are in no way prog... Neither is MUSE. I like to think of these bands as "Slightly experimental alt. rock" |

Uh oh, this could mean we might have to move another non-prog band to Crossover like we did with Coheed.
