^^ Alright, you've given them a shot at least. Just keep in mind they aren't progressive like Yes and Genesis, but more in their own way. Give Damnation and Watershed a try. Those are their most by-the-books progressive releases. Damnation is growl-free and in the vein of Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd. Watershed. is a typical progressive metal album with some grunts time-to-time. If those don't convince you that they are more than a death metal band, then nothing will.

I should try out DAMNATION some time... If its full of Mellotron, I'm there
Please, keep in mind, I love them as a band, but I just don't feel that they're really very prog...

| Opeth? Not Progressive? You clearly haven't listened to Watershed, because you can't possibly listen to it and say it is not prog. |
I agree that calling OPETH progressive is a bit of a stretch... I own 5 of their albums now, and they still feel like pure death metal to me...

2008 was just a crappy year for music in general.

Two words: Lunatic Soul

I didn't know what that was, so I looked it up, and this is what I found: Yeah, not buying it. And anyway, one album can't make a year good by itself.

Do you ever want to go back and redo a top of the year list later? Seriously, I find albums all the time that weren't hyped that much that I discovery some years later... either buying a back catalog or word of mouth and I think, "this album is one of the best albums released that year" yet it never made it to anyone's list. Weird how that works out.
And yeah... some of the list is totally amazing music, but isn't what I'd call prog. And yeah... it is missing Ghost Circus - Across the Line which is easily in the top 5 prog albums of 2008. IMO.

im glad opeth made a top ten appearance however i'm not sure watershed was deserving of number one, it seemed a little uninspired compared to their early stuff to my ears at least... il bacio della medusa was well deserving of a high spot as was mars volta. thought insurgentes would have been a little higher... but i guess the album isn't released as a hard copy until march 2009 so that might have something to do with it i guess

True. Opeth and Volta got huge bumps for being well known it seems, but overall I'd say that I'm rather satisfied with the list.

I think they got huge bumps for being AWESOME!
I'm very late to seeing this list. I don't know how I missed it. Anyway, it's somewhat of a good list. |
your right, it's a GREAT list. I don't think Volta made it up there because they're awesome. They made it because they are a truly talented and creative group.

Hail -Radioswim- and his in-grown toenail!

Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
