James, Roblov, Pat-

you need this album.

Trying to deduce what "this album" is...your last five reviews:

5 starsDREAM THEATER Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence | review
5 starsTANGERINE DREAM Phaedra | review
4 starsPROTO-KAW Early Recordings from Kansas 1971-1973 | review
5 starsRUSH Permanent Waves | review
5 starsIQ The Seventh House | review

I'll guess you're talking about Proto-Kaw.
I own the DT and Rush albums, not interested in TD or IQ.

You are correct.

And wowee, have I been generous with the five stars!  ShockedLOL

I have to confess, I'm not actually sure I've ever heard anything by Kansas. Go figure. They're on Spotify. I'll take a listen sometime. Phaedra I've heard. It's very good. But Rubycon and Stratosfear both have a bit more bite. Dream Theater... that one I'll llisten to sometime. I want to get round to reviewing Awake sometime this century, so I'm making myself do that before I listen to anything else by them. IQ sounds like not m thing.

I specifically recommend to you the Proto-Kaw early sessions because they sound a fair bit like Van der Graaf Generator, which I know you enjoy.  I could be wrong about that comparison, but I don't think I am.

This album
would probably be to the liking of the RIO/Avant contingent if they aren't familiar with it.  The description on the sticker "The debut CD by NYC composer Richard Woodson is a bold and brilliant synthesis of RIO progressive rock, modern jazz, and contemporary composition.  Densely textured, angular, melodic compositions filled with complexity, intensity and spontaneity, the music is as personal and individualistic as a fingerprint".

Yeah, some RIO people were going crazy over Rich Woodson a while ago. Personally, I found him a bit flat to be enjoyed.

It's a 5 minute section of that song cycle. Most of the songs in it are distinct and it makes more sense to think of it as a concept album with musical motifs.

Wow, Amazon MP3 fouled up spectacularly.  They basically put the entire 55 minutes in one track called Occam's Razor and the rest of the suite is broken up in separate tracks.  So they are selling the first disc twice, as it were, but you can effectively buy the whole 55 minute suite for $0.99!

It's funny to me because Occam's Razor is based on simplicity, which is ironic because it is the name of a part of a 55 minute song. It is probably funnier to me because I have a warped sense of humor. Confused

Maybe I should start a sister thread to the tinnitus club called the migraine club. Unhappy

Sound quality good?

If so, I may just download the whole album for five bucks.  Big smile

Haven't listened yet, but Amazon is usually reliable, and I think encodes at 256 kbps.
