Weather Report. Great avant-jazz and fusion classic. Brian Eno next, Kraftwerk possibly third. Bella Fleck ...Hmmm?

I have to hear Jaga Jazzists still, but if I like them more than The Dear Hunter I'd be absolutely stunned.

So here's a question, I hear a lot of good things about "The Decemberists" what are they like and where should I start if I was to try to pick up something by them?

| The Decemberists are wonderful folk rock music. The debut is excellent, but lacks progressive elements (with the exception of two tracks). The second album is so-so acoustic music. The third album is very, very good (same as the debut for me).
Where they shine progressively is with The Crane Wife, which simultaneously contains their simplest and and most progressive moments ("The Island" is brilliant) and The Hazards of Love, which is a rock opera and my album of year thus far.
All of the albums are four star and above except for Her Majesty. I recommend the latest two, but the debut hits me on a visceral lever.

My first vote would have gone to Weather Report, but since they are dominating so much, I thought I'd cast one for my second, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Third place goes to Brian Eno. All three of these artists are innovative and fantastic. Interesting mix of musical styles on this poll.

Gonna go with Eno, not only for his own great albums, but also the stuff he's done for other bands and artists.

What? Her Majesty so-so acoustic music? Is "Billy Liar" so-so acoustic music? "Chimbley Sweep?" "Soldiering Life?" "Gymnast?" "Shanty for the....whateverthatshipwascalled?" Anyway, just a different point of view. For me, all their albums are four star and higher, save the debut, an album which everyone else really seems to like but I just think is "okay" (because I'm a miserable old crab). For this reason, popular opinion seems that you should start with something like The Crane Wife.
