^ Yes he does have an excellent singing voice, but the music is occasionally boring.

window payne boring? I think too many kids have been brainwashed by metal. It's all about fashion these days. I don't follow others, I just go for quality

quiet you... people are discussing, rather then forcing their opinions with harsh medicine.
It's not that Damnnation is boring, I find it musically exciting. I don't think Opeth without growls would neccesarily be worse, or bad. But I think what makes Opeth so great is how completely dynamic their sound is, within a single composition even. It's quite amazing actually if you think about it.
Take the song from Ghost Reveries "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" for instance. Very dynamic song.

I go for quality, too. The entire album isn't boring, but parts are, especially when in comparison to Still Life. btw, I am NOT a huge metalhead. I typically don't even like growling, but Opeth's dynamic shifts between acoustic and death metal sections is incredible. Windowpane is an exceptionally good song, and the whole album is very good (I gave it 4 stars actually). But it lacks the great combination of acoustic, death metal, and progressive rock and metal that makes Opeth great in the first place.

Why does everyone seem to call him that way? Anyway, it's pretty funny though!

Opeth is the only band with growling vocals that I DO really like. The contrast between the demonic cookie monster vocals and the clean singing is so great, and it is what makes them interesting.
Mikael's clean voice is one of the best in rock, in my opinion. All of Damnation and most of Watershed I recommend to a non-death metal voice fan. The new album was a surprise, as apart from two or three tracks, there is not much growling. The ballads on Watershed are gorgeous, in my opinion. But when Watershed is heavy (Heir Apparent is probably the heaviest thing they've ever done), it is REALLY heavy.
I don't think Damnation is boring at all. I'm a big metal fan as well as a proghead, but the songwriting and musicianship on Damnation is second to none. It may even be one of my favourites from them.

I feel you, OP; I too prefer singing to growling, thought I will listen to Watershed (only Opeth album I've got) completely through with no unpleasant side effects from the growling ;)

I hear you. One of the main beauties of Opeth and bands similar is the contrast between growling and clean vox. It's one of the reasons I listen to them.
Anyways, to the point, here's a list chronologically:
Morningrise: To Bid You Farewell (strongly recommended)
My Arms Your Hearse Credence
Still Life Face Of Melinda Benighted
Blackwater Park Harvest
Deliverance A Fair Judgement
Ghost Reveries Atonement Hours Of Wealth Isolation Years
Watershed Coil Burden Porcelain Heart Hex Omega
I think that solves everything as far as pure clean vox goes

Add in "Bridge of Sighs" and the cover of some Swedish pop chick's song "Den ständiga resan" from the Watershed special edition to that.
Also, the covers of Alice in Chain's "Would?" (Awesome!) and of Deep Purple's "Soldier of Fortune."

Does anyone have a list of Opeth songs without growling. I just listened all the way through Damnation and really enjoyed it, but I can't stand it when Mr. Cookie Monster arrives. Anyone know them enough to help on that.
Thanks

I was in your position when I first listened to Opeth. I listened and loved Damnation, but couldn't get around the growls. Then I listened to "The Drapery Falls" off of Blackwater Park, which only has growls in one section, and I loved it. In that song, the growls made sense within the context of the song. So I slowly came around to them, and now I own a great many Opeth records.
This whole Opeth w/out growls chase reminds me of a Python sketch where the customer can't get any breakfast without Spam.
