Great choice, RobThumbs Up! I love lentils, and introduced Micky to them. In Italy we eat them for New Year's Day, since they are supposed to bring prosperity (each lentil represents a coin).

They do look like little coins now that you mention it!

One New Year tradition in some parts in the US is to eat cabbage.  Some say cabbage brings luck, but I think it brings gas.  Dead

(Love cabbage myself, by the way).

 ^ I still need to make stuffed cabbage, I did some peppers that came out well with a beef/lamb/rice stuffing and a sweet tomato sauce  ..I'm also a lentil soup fan though I don't get to eat it nearly as much as I'd like to, my mom used to make it with Italian sausage.. scrump!

Yes, lentils with any kind of sausage are a match made in heavenHeart. In Italy we have this big, highly seasoned (though not hot) sausage called cotechino, which is traditionally eaten with lentils on New Year's Day. The sausage is boiled, then cut into slices and braised with the lentils for a short time - it is one of those dishes that taste better and better with time. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find cotechino here (though I've heard that in places like New York, Chicago or Philadelphia it's very easy to find), so I generally settle for kielbasa sausage, which is almost as good.

Anyway, this morning I made banana pancakes for breakfast - very, very yummy! Had them with maple syrup, but next time I make them I'd like to try some different kind of topping - perhaps with chocolate?

I've been making hotdishes, the ultimate comfort food of the Midwest.  If you don't know what a hotdish is, you've never been to Minnesota. 

I'll post a recipe sometime.  Most originate from the 50s-60s, and are gloriously full of fat and taste.  Wink

I haven't, but I know about hotdishes - I've got a couple of cookbooks full of recipes for themWink! I have been making a lot of casseroles over the winter, mostly pasta-based (I'm Italian after allWink!), though I generally have a light hand with fat.

Chocolate and Banana Crepes are a dish made in heaven (or Brittany, whichever is closer), so choc-banana and those thick american pancakes would be good too. First time I went to San Francisco my usual breakfast there was walnut pancakes with strawberries and maple syrup - absolute yum!
 
Tonight I'm cooking up a Tuscan bean stew with Scillian sausage and roast butternut squash.

hot chocolate sauce made with 150gm 70% choc, 100ml water and a spoonful of sugar is excellent with pancakes - a touch of rum wouldn't spoil it either Wink

Sounds like a Lancashire Hot Pot, Irish Stew, Scouse, Shepard's/Cottage/Cumberland Pie, Eintopf, Pasta Bake, Cassolette, Lasagna, Moussaka, type thing.

Oh yes, lentil soup is great. I make one with pancetta. It's great for cold winter days. Robust and yummy

My all time fav girl is home from work soon and I am whippin' up dinner.
 
Chicken Parmagiana HeartHug Standard Aussie Dish.............The Italians changed everybodys eating habits here and a big thankyou to all of em'
 
Anyway Lee has requested Mash Potatoes or Pommes Puree if you prefer ( Sounds better than Mash)
 
Accompanied by Pois du Maison .........Yeah ,peas blanched and tossed in butter,light braised diced onion with a little diced ham........touch of sugar with the seasoning.
 
 Dessert ................Golden Syrup Dumplings with Thickened cream or ice-cream.......it has p-lenty of syrup sauce anyway.
 
One other note I do the crumbing and boning or whatever myself but tonight bugger makin the concasse  for the Parma...........using a JarShocked
 
Now if everything goes to plan..get the candles burning,........the incence stencher smokin'...........I should be right for a damn good nightWink Maybe a flower on the table as well and a cool drink for when she gets in the door.HeartHug
