Any suggestions? I'm looking for prog music with a strong funk influence... lots of slap bass, some horns and saxes, even some soul singers! Preferably non-instrumental, but any suggestions appreciated. I'm thinking of something that sounds like Frank Zappa's Over-Nite Sensation or Mr. Bungle's debut. Thumbs Up

Thanks!

-Jeff

Check out the fusion section; a lot of it tends to veer straight into the pays du funk. Currently playing John McLaughlin's "Electric Dreams" and you'd best believe it's got a great groove going.

Sounds like you just described the first 4 or 5 Billy Cobham albums.

- Cymande
- Funkadelic
- Mandrill
- Herbie Hancock's 'fat albert rotunda'
- Okyerema Asante (see the jazz-rock lounge for the album I suggested)
- Big Jullien & His All Stars
- Sixun (french band with the phenomenal Paco Séry on drums [who played with Salif keita and Joe Zawinul] check out 'l'eau de là')
- maybe Prince's 'rainbow children'
- Jef Lee Johnson/Sonny Thompson/Michael bland's 'news from the jungle' and their collaboration with Michel Portal 'Minneapolis'
- Pain Of Salvation's 'entropia'
- Diabolos In Musika : the groove metal band of guitarist extraordinaire Ronny Heimdal (they are in PA I believe)

Some instrumental funk as well :
- Booker T & The MG's
- Speedometer
- The Meters
- Lefties Soul Connection

You may be interested in afrobeat as well, check out Fela Kuti's 'open close' and 'underground'

Well they're not listed here as prog, but the Screaming Headless Torsos should be right up your alley.

'free your mind and your ass will follow' is even better.

I am surprised no one mentioned Embryo :

And what about Curt Cress Clan with drummer extraordinaire Curt Cress (later with Saga) on drums :

Not sure that counts but there is also some excellent funky punk :
