Well guys... finally I post in the web my latest research of Traditional dancing of Guatemala. I spend almost two years taking pictures of these dancing through the whole country... I did a series of magazines about it...  and I share with you a couple of pictures about this interesting and colorful activity... your thoughts are very welcome... I hope you like it...

Thanks guys... Alex, those are a mixture between spanish traditions and mayan sacred dances... they were very similar, but the spanish were for evangelistic goals, most of them a kind of theater about spanish against muslim, but the mayas dancing were considered way more sacred... they used the masks and the dress as they believe that the spirits inhabit them when they were the mask and customs... so, when the spanish saw those dancings, they tried to adapt those to the spanish tradition... and new ones emerge of that... These other pictures are from a "recent" original dance... from 1860... Legion of Devils... wonderful dancing and the most original I have seen... very interesting... I even tried to buy a mask... because those are beautiful... but they are very selfish... they are really keepers of their traditions and didn't let me buy the mask... Ouch I want one of those...

Very interesting! I know practically nothing about Mayan culture (though I suppose it was at least a bit similar with the Aztec culture; is that correct?). The masks are wonderful, and they remind me of Romanian peasant masks. I'll look to see if I can find pictures with those masks.

Oh... yes... Aztecs and Mayas are alike, from an outsider point of view, the way of government and religion were very different, and the Mayas were older, so when the Aztecs took control of all the region from Mexico to El Salvador, it was the post classic period of the Mayas and their golden times were gone.. so the Aztecs rised when the Mayas were already broken by war and division... they get influenced together, you know, like the greeks and the Rome Empire... both were influenced by both cultures...

Don't know what masks are you talking about... but I'm interested... it could be an interesting influence or similarity between germans and local little town persons from Guatemala...

OH... interesting, they use real hair... do they have some sacred meaning or is it just a dress...?
