My, both are superb bands when at their peak. But for overall contributions and staying power I go with Yes. In various incarnations they've put out decent ( and sometimes stellar ) albums in the 70's, 80's, 90's ,and 00's. There's even the possibility of more to come !

Blimey, a really tight one Yes were my introduction to prog. Genesis followed very shortly behind. Both are exceptional bands. Oh God, this is difficult Okay, I'll look at the number of stinkers in the catalogue. For Genesis, the second side of Genesis was appalling. That's about it, really. For Yes, there was Open Your Eyes, Drama (sorry), and a lot of Union to shy away from. On that basis, Genesis just about gets my vote.

Obviously these are two of the greatest symphonic prog bands ever. I have the complete discographies of both bands. Since there is a gun to my head, I chose Yes.

I'll have a go too .
Yes > From Genesis to Revelation (neither is great )
Time and a Word < Trespass
The Yes Album > Nursery Cryme
Fragile = Foxtrot
Close to the Edge < Selling England by the Pound (Genesis' best)
Tales from Topographic Oceans > The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (both brilliant)
Relayer < Trick of the Tail
Going for the One > Wind & Wuthering (both great, but this is Yes' best album )
Tormato < And Then There Were Three
Drama > Duke
I won't bother comparing individual albums in the pop era, though I easily prefer Genesis in that era.
Overall my choice is definitely Yes. I just feel there's much more emotion and intensity in their music, and that decides it for me.

Genesis, Yes and King Crimson are the best bands of Prog Rock imo.
Voting Yes because they are behind Genesis with two votes.

Have to vote for Genesis. Both fantastic but early Genesis just wins it for me.

And yet another toughie. While I truely believe that Genesis's decline after Gabriel left should preclude them from winning, it's still hard to dismiss them. Yes has had it's disappointing era's and albums as well but not to the extent of Genesis post 1974. Still, I think I prefer the overall 'sound' of Genesis.
GENESIS.

Yes has made the best prog album ever: Close to the Edge, but when I look further than that I have to vote for Genesis.

I love them both, but f I had to choose which band has moved me most over the years, it'd have to be (classic) Genesis.
For my tastes, Yes made 3 truly great albums I can't live without -- but Genesis made 7.
