They are both excellent, but The Lamb just about pips it.

The Lamb is also brilliant, but more up to my taste. It gets my vote. |

Unfortunately I have yet to hear Pawn Hearts though I now have the entire VDGG collection. I shall not be biased and just throw the wonderful Lamb a vote just yet. Will listen to Pawn with bated breath at earliest opportunity.

difficult to compare a single album with a double one, would PH be as good as a double album? i don't know, i love both but i'll go with the lamb |
A 20 minute version of Man-erg would be very nice. That would leave about another 25 minutes of music to find to make a great double album.
Having said that, the Lamb is my favourite studio album ever so it gets the vote.

PH for the context of the music and the band. The Lamb is brilliant but Genesis have another pieces!
VDGG always. Genesis quite always.

I'll vote for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadwa! It's number 3 in my all time list! But Pawn Hearts is progressing very fast in the list!

as much as I love The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway I pick Pawn Hearts.
both absolute masterpieces but when Pawn Hearts was released it was so phenomenal and unique piece of music (still is!). The Lamb came 3 years later and between these albums lot had happened ...

Both albums rank about #5 in my lists of these two bands, but The Lamb wins this easily.

My favourite Van der Graaf Generator album vs. my favourite Genesis. I like VdGG much more. Even though I do think the Lamb is great (the only Genesis album I really like), it's still an easy vote for Pawn Hearts from me.
EDIT: Though I guess we shouldn't count bonus tracks on remastered versions, the, I think excellent, Pawn Hearts bonus tracks make the album even more special to me. Incidentally, I rather think it a shame that the double-record idea for Pawn Hearts didn't happen.

Pawn Hearts is my pick - after all these years and loads of listening I still don't like The Lamb.
