He's made more that 20 albums so I've decided to skip some of his 80's and 90's albums. He's not exactly prog, but nevertheless it would be interesting to see which albums listeners of progressive rock prefer the most… I prefer Low, possibly the most progressive of the above listed Heroes, Lodger & Station to Station aren't unworthy rivals though…

I love Low, a seriously cool and icy listening experience (side two) but I just had to go for Hunky Dory as I think it's his finest songwriting hour, from Bewlay Brothers and Quicksand to the awesome Life On Mars. Plus it's got Wakeman on keys! Top notch! |

If Tonight gets any votes, my head will probably explode. PS. I voted for Ziggy, of course. |

http://www.teenagewildlife.com/ no, it's not porn...get your minds out of the gutter! It's my favorite Bowie site on the web. Just about everything you want to know (except the truth behind the Jagger rumour). I voted for Scary Monsters, but it's an extremely tough call. I had to compromise when I burned my last Bowie compilation becuase there's just way too much good stuff, plus I couldn't bear to separate any of the songs on Ziggy. Anyone else ever make a connection between Bowie's "Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family", The Dead's "What's Become of the Baby?", and Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" ? Probably not. You all seem like relatively sane people... |

The Heroes album with Fripp on guitar and Eno on keys has always been one of my favourite albums. I also love the soundtrack from the German film Christiane F where Bowie makes a cameo and does a part- German version of Heroes. |

There -- that wasn't so bad, was it?
I voted with the one I return to most often (I really love LOTS of these albums!): The killer, rockin', Mick Ronson on gee-tar: MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD!
Also: LODGER, with Belew. ZIGGY, natch. "Station to Station," on STAGE (what a live album!) Scary Monsters -- Entire album, but title cut has great Fripp lead, maybe his best... according to Fripp himself! Low & Heroes were great, especially for Eno fans. Others too, but I also really like latest REALITY. Killer, essential version of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso Edited by Peter Rideout |

I agree with you Peter and there are a few more Bowie albums I could mention. I have two albums he made with when he was in the band, Tin Machine withReeves Gabrel on guitar. The reason I have Let's Dance is becauust the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn plays guitar on it! Many people don't believe me when I mention this!

^ Yes! My wife makes fun of me because every time "China Girl" comes on, I'm compelled to say, "Hey, did you know..." followed by a mention of SRV or Iggy Pop.

I'd start nearer to the beginning with THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD and ZIGGY STARDUST, then all over the place, but Scary Monsters should also be a priority. Low & Heroes for "proggier," Lodger for bizaare/fun/Belew. Lucky you, GB -- great music to discover! Edited by Peter Rideout |

Well it really depends what you're looking for. Hunky Dory is more laid back and has some of the best lyrics ever, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane are great glam-rock records, Station To Station features an amazing prog track, Low, Heroes and Lodger are weird experimental albums which feature Brian Eno, Scary Monsters is a great harder rocking album, Let's Dance is a fantastic pop record, Earthling is more in the area of techno, Heathen is an outstanding, darker pop-rock record. So no matter what you're looking for, odds are you can find it in Bowie's catalogue.

My favorites are
Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs although the albums previous to Aladdin have many great songs, Aladdins best are non radio classics, Dogs is the last great glimpse at rock n roll Bowie before the fade to electronics. Scary Monsters being the peak of electronic/rock/glam. Pinups is a great deversion. ![]() |
