They seem to be in the Top 50 Artists list almost always. I suspect that some of their fans keep visiting their artist page here just to put them in that list. Who knows? They are rarely talked about in the forums and I've only heard their streaming songs on PA. Not bad actually.

Start with any of their most progressive albums "Idörabló" (1977), "Csillagok Útján" (1978) (my personal fav), Gammapolisz (1979). "Titanium" compilation is a good starting point too.
By the way, there are tons of videos on YouTube and you can listen (stream) most of Omega albums on their website - go to Discography page: http://omega.hu/diszkografia.php?cat=17, click desired album and enjoy. Edited by NotAProghead - January 25 2012 at 07:39 |

200 Years After the Last War is a kind of heavy organ/guitar hard driving style and at times it was reminiscent of the sound Uriah Heep produced on "Demons and Wizards" and earlier material. It also had the style of early Deep Purple and Lucifer's Friend. The vocals in Hungarian gave the band a more distinctive sound. In the mid to late 70's the band fell into a Symphonic Rock catagory and some of those releases are worthwhile like "Skyrover". My favorite song is "Russian Winter". On the original 200 Years after the last War cd release there was a piece titled Suite which is from Omega 5. It's a totally different release from the one which is available now. The current release is how the band originally intended the album to be.

I started with the live album, Élö Omega (I start oddly with bands), and with what I consider their masterpiece, 10000 Lépés, the sound is a bit different than on the later albums (ranging from Ummagumma/Meddle-era Pink Floyd to Uriah Heep-ish hard rock), but I like the earlier phase of the band more anyway. As someone has already said, 200 Years After the Last War is pretty good too.

I remember having their albums in the late 70's and the band was signed to Passport Records. This caused the band to have their albums for distribution under various titles in the 70's for some marketing concept. So at first it was rather difficult to figure out if you were listening to the original album released in Europe or the one which was toyed with and contained tracks from various albums and under a different title completely. Some of their more structured pieces are I suppose epic. Pieces like that can be found on "Timerobber" or "Skyrover".
They were part to a scene in Europe and America along with other bands like Guru, Guru, Lucifer's Friend, Neu, even Amon Dull II had the Omega guitar sound. And again, you would find all of these band's albums in a person's collection along with Omega. Try listening to them at low volume on a bunk bed by a window during a snow blizzard with a book and a bottle of wine. That fits.
