I'm looking for some good prog bands with two drummers, or at least ones that are percussion heavy. All I can think of is King Crimson and the Mothers

Sludge metal band Kylesa has two drummers on their most recent few albums. Though honestly I find it hard to tell.

I'm not particularly familiar with them, but I believe I heard The Mars Volta had two drummers at some point.

Look to Japan.

Bondage Fruit is my favorite but Boredoms are the percussion freaks:

Check Damo's thread in the "blogs" forum. I know for a fact that he has posted several mulch-percussion groups.

(lol auto correct, should be multi-percussion)

I like mulch-percussion.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

Yes, the subdued tones are very relaxing.

The "kit drummer and percussionist" formula works very well, aka Bill Bruford and Jamie Muir on Larks' Tongues In Aspic by KC.

Try Brand X, this is one of their best: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masques_(Brand_X_album)

Morris Pert & Chuck Bergi bang up quite a storm!

Also, the late Pierre Moerlen and company bang up quite a storm on this one!

However, as far as two drummers, each with full kit, I've only seen that rarely in prog (King Crimson for one).  Adrian Belew used to sit down on a kit with Bruford in the earlier days of KC Discipline, it was great!

Live Genesis (from the late 70's onward) LOL
The Grateful Dead, though not Prog (they did have their moments) have 2 very clever drummers in Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart.
The Hawkwind classic 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' (from 1975) featured Alan Powell & Simon King on drums/perc.
I'm sure Amon Duul II had 2 drummers at some stage with Daniel Fichelscher and Pete Leopold.
That's all I can think of off-the-bat......
Oh, Adam And The Ants had 2 drummers but they're not Prog............

When I saw Mike Oldfield's Five Miles Out World Tour in Sydney in '82, there were two drummers on stage: Morris Pert and Pierre Moerlen (both gone now, sadly). Heavy sound, awesome night! If you can track down any recordings of that tour, you'd be in luck.

The Tubes were another band that used two drummers live.

'The Complete Mike Oldfield' box set has a live version of the track Platinum (although shortened)  with the 2 drummers. Always loved that extra texture to the sound.

Hey, thanks for reminding me! I used to have that. Cool

Yeah, Platinum was the opening number of the concert: Tim Cross hammering out the rhythm on piano, Mike Oldfield playing very gritty guitar, and then when the two drummers entered together - just explosive.

German band Aera had two drummers (Lutz Oldemeier and the late Freddy Setz) and a percussionist (Helmut Meier-Limberg) on their excellent live album. Setz occasionally played keyboards too.

Of course the Grateful Dead had two drummers, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann..

As to Mike Oldfield: There are two excellent drummers (Pierre Moerlen and Simon Phillips, in an interview in the German "Musik Magazin" Mike Oldfield called them "the best two drummers in the world", and certainly both are excellent)) in the "Live at Knebworth" video.

I can confirm that Amon Düül 2 had two drummers. On their first album it was not Daniel Fichelscher and Peter Leopold though, it was Dieter Serfas instead of Fichelscher. Serfas and Leopold were occasionally supported by Schrat on bongos, Holger Trülzsch on Turkish drums and Renate Knaup on tambourine; just listen to the famous "inside the kraal" section of the 20 minute track "Phallus Dei".

Embryo often have two drummers, and even if there is only one drummer there is often a lot of percussion involved, especially on the live album with the Karnataka College of Percussion.

*sigh* I love playing with drummers, and would REALLY like to get two involved onstage!  Multiply each by two:

How do you tell if the stage is level?
The drummer is drooling from both sides of his mouth.

How can you tell a drummer's at the door?
The knocking speeds up.

What's the last thing a drummer says in a band?
"Hey, how about we try one of my songs?"

What do you call a drummer that breaks up with his girlfriend?
Homeless.

How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Five: One to screw the bulb in, and four to talk about how much better
Neil Peart could've done it.

How do you get a drummer off of your porch?  Pay him 10 bucks for the pizza.

"Hey buddy, how late does the band play?"
"Oh, about half a beat behind the drummer."

Why do guitarists put drumsticks on the dash of their car?
So they can park in the handicapped spot.

How is a drum solo like a sneeze?
You know it's coming, but there's nothing you can do about it.

What's the first thing a drummer says when he moves to LA?
"Would you like fries with that, sir?

What is the difference between a drummer and a savings bond?
One will mature and make money.

What do you do if you accidentally run over a drummer?
Back up.

What did the drummer say to the band leader?
"Do you want me to play too fast or too slow?"

The Montreaux DVD also has two drummers, excellent DVD.

Radiohead - Live From The Basement DVD features two drummers.
