Me too....... but I'm in denial! ;-)
Brushing aside any ancient band politics, Mick Pointer, Nick Barrett, Ian Salmon, Mike Varty and Brian Cummins will be having a bloody great "Script" party at the Boerderij, Zoetermeer. It's all about celebrating these incredible songs that formed such an important part of our lives. Great musicians, great fun, lots of friends and a jolly big sing-a-long. If you can get to the Boerderij on Saturday do so, I think this is the last time Mick and Chums are doing this show ![]() ![]() |

Trust me, when you're 19 years old & infatuated with a lady who then goes out with your best mate... and then you hear 'Script' for the first time...

I think I was about 14 when I first heard it. I played it to death, and yes it is considerably better than The Sentinal. I still Script is the best thing they ever done. The albus that followed were more 'mature' but not as heartfelt, in my opinion. |

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I read somewhere that "Script" is still the 2nd best selling album of Marillion (any era/line-up) That speaks volumes.
It's quite marvellous.........and when you think about it they were all SO young, they were the biggest "boy band" of the era! ha ha ha!

I quite liked The Sentinel. But will agree that Script is the better of the two. The title track has one of the most beautiful set of lyrics ever. And Forgotten Sons is such a dark and creepy sounding song (esp. the "minister, minister care for your children..." part) it gives me chills when I hear it. The stuff in between ain't half bad either.

Could be Diz Minnett
Actually, I think that is Diz Minnett. PT didn't join Marillion until 1982 and I saw another pic of Marillion performing in 1981 and the bass player looks just like the guy in the photo you posted. Confirmed here: http://www.morain.de/Marillion/04Setlists-1982.html

Blimey. 30 years. So much has happened, my friends
Without a shadow of a doubt, and by quite a way, the best of the new wave of prog debut albums, and still stands up very well today. |

EMI were very astute in their marketing of the album, and pretty brave in doing so at a time when the charts & record shops were full of electro-pop, watered down soul & new romantics. This was also a time when the established order of original prog bands were either imploding (Floyd), choosing a completely new direction (Yes/Genesis) or becoming a parody of themselves (ELP - sorry...). To promote a band whose debut album would contain only 6 songs, no obvious singles (the one eventually released dealt with substance abuse & suicide - not exactly Human League territory) & whose live show centered around a 20 minute epic could have been seen as commercial folly - sure, there were other bands around, playing the circuit to loyal fan bases, but never getting the break... With the release of Script, Marillion got that break & didn't so much open the door to other bands, as break it down. |
